MANSFIELD, Mass. – Returning to the field for the first time since November 2019, the University of New Haven football team will enter the 2021 season as the preseason favorite to win the Northeast-10 Conference championship in a poll of the league's nine head coaches.
New Haven racked up a total of 66 points and six of the nine possible first place votes in the poll, finishing seven points ahead of the Bentley Falcons who garnered the final three first place votes. New Haven and Bentley finished the 2019 season with identical 6-2 records in conference play, however the Falcons were tabbed NE10 Champion having defeated the Chargers in the regular season.
Rounding out the top three in the preseason poll is the Stonehill Skyhawks with 46 points. Assumption comes in fourth with 39 points, while Paces closes out the top-five with 37 points. Saint Anselm garnered 29 points for sixth place, while American International and Southern Connecticut State finished tied for seventh place with 24 points. Franklin Pierce rounds out the poll in ninth place.
The Blue and Gold will kick off the 43rd season of Charger football on Saturday, September 4 with the first of three-straight home games which will open the 2021 season, hosting the Franklin Pierce Ravens in non-conference battle. The season opener will serve as the second all-time meeting between the two programs with the Ravens elevating the Sprint Football team prior to the 2019 campaign. Kickoff from Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium is slated for 1:00 p.m.
