Women's Soccer Suffers First Set Back 2-1 in OT at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – Sophomore Dakota Cimetta (Coral Springs, Fla./J.P. Taravella) fired her second goal of the season to knot the score at one, but the New Haven women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in overtime against Stonehill at W.B. Mason Stadium.

LEADERS

Cimetta's goal was the lone tally of the day for the Blue and Gold while she partnered with senior Mackenzie Myers (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) to score the goal. The goal for Cimetta and the assist for Myers are their second of each on the season, tying each of them for the team lead.

In goal, graduate keeper Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) collected a season-high seven saves on the night, facing a litany of shots from the Skyhawks as they led in that column with a 24-7 advantage. Stonehill also led the way with eight corner kicks, compared to just three for New Haven, while the Skyhawks were also whistled for being offside on four occasions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite the Skyhawks coming out of the gates firing five shots in the first 10:30 of the contest, neither team found the back of the net in the first half. New Haven mustered just one shot in the opening half, with that strike from Meghan Dellea (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) forcing the Skyhawks keeper to make a save. Davis finished the first half with four saves, three of which came on the final three shots of the half for Stonehill.

The Skyhawks again set the pace in the beginning of the second half, maintaining the majority of the possession in the early going. That aggressive start to the period would pay off for Stonehill as they broke the scoreless stalemate 11 minutes into the second half, while also forcing Davis to make a pair of stops prior to breaking through.

The Chargers didn't let that lead last long as they scored just over six minutes later on a set piece when awarded a corner kick early in the 63rd minute. Both teams had opportunities to close things out in regulation, with the Chargers taking a pair of shots in the final five minutes, the last of which from Dellea ricocheted off the cage.

Stonehill closed out the victory with two seconds remaining in the first extra period when a ball served into the top of the box bounced around before being drilled home for the golden goal.
