WATERBURY, Conn. – The New Haven women's volleyball team split a pair of matches this afternoon, including a win over Bridgeport on the opening day of the Eagles Invitational Tournament hosted by Post University. The Chargers got the best of its local rival in the opener of the tournament in a thrilling five set victory over the Purple Knights, before falling to Bentley 3-1 in the second match.
Freshman outside hitter Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led the team once again with 28 hammers by days end, including a team-best 15 in the match against the Falcons. With a game-high 16 kills in the opener against Bridgeport, junior outside hitter Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) finished the day with 26 total, just ahead of senior Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) who drilled 21 kills across the two matches. Freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) dished out 82 assists on the day, including a career-high 48 in the opener.
Defensively, sophomore libero Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) led the Chargers by collecting 34 digs between the two matches, 23 of which came in game one to lead all players. Brown collected 27 digs on the day, one ahead of Barry, who split 26 evenly across the two matches. At the tape the Chargers were once again led by senior middle Asiya Way (Denver, Colo./Denver East) with four blocks, one ahead of Jessee with three.
