Women’s Tennis Sweeps Season Opener Over Saint Anslem

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Three players earned their first collegiate victory Sunday afternoon as the New Haven women's tennis team swept Saint Anselm 7-0. Freshman Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual School) earned her first win in doubles play, in addition to classmate Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) and graduate Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) who picked up wins in both the singles and doubles rounds.

DOUBLES RESULTS (Order of Finish: 1, 3, 2)

The Chargers No. 1 pairing of Shankar and graduate Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) took beat the Hawks pairing of Emily Jacy and Bridget Hughes 6-0.

The Chargers No. 2 pairing of Carreras and graduate Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) beat the Hawks pairing of Anastasia Kapothanasis and Olivia Parzick 6-2.

The Chargers No. 3 pairing of Martinelli and sophomore Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) beat the Hawks pairing of Julia Svor and Julia Casaletta 6-0.

SINGLES RESULTS (Order of Finish: 4, 2, 3, 1, 5, 6)

At No. 1 singles, Andric took down Kapothanasis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Carreras took down Jacy in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, New Haven senior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) took down Julia Svor in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 4 singles, Shankar took down Hughes 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 5 singles, New Haven sophomore Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) took down the Hawks' Elle Poncette in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5.

At No. 6 singles, New Haven sophomore Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) took down Hawks' Abby Svor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
