The LEAD
The University of New Haven men's soccer team will head back on the road Tuesday, Sept. 14, to take on the Nyack Warriors at Laurel Hill Pary in Secaucus at 7:00 PM.
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
Dating back to 1999, Tuesday's matchup will be only the seventh all-time between the Chargers and the Warriors. New Haven holds a series record of 5-1 against Nyack College. The Chargers shut out the Warriors the last two times they've played. Click Here for a complete series history.
Â
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (2-0, 0-0 NE10)
For the first time since the 2016 season, the Chargers have started the season off 2-0. The offense has been on full display as of late with a NE10 leading nine goals scored, tied with Franklin Pierce.
Â
After a 5-0 win over Bloomfield last week, the Charger's completed a feat untouched since the 2004 season, scoring four or more goals in consecutive games.
Â
Freshman forward Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) scored once again, as he currently stands tied for second in the NE-10 for goals (3). Senior midfielder Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) is just behind him, as he's tied for third (2). Tano Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) and Tiago Vintem (Lisbon, Portugal/E.S. Pedro Nunes) also added their first goals of the season against the Bears. Desseno's third assist of the year put him in sole position of first in the conference.
Â
The Charger's defense came up big last week as freshman goalkeeper Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) was only called on once to make the save.
Â
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS (1-3, 0-0 CACC)
The Warriors' start to the season has been less than ideal, losing their first three games of the year. However, Nyack picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, a 4-1 win over Staten Island. The Warriors were ranked 8th in the CACC Preseason Coaches's poll. Nyack finished 2-14-2 (1-11 CACC) during the 2019 season, going 1-6-1 while hosting. The Warriors' have a large, diverse squad, composed of nine freshmen, five sophomores, eight juniors, three seniors and four graduate students. Head Coach Alex Schmidt, who entered his 3rd year at the helm of the Nyack College men's soccer program, comes into the game with a 3-17-2 record.
NEXT UP
The Chargers will stay on the road as they head to Springfield, Mass. on Saturday for their first NE-10 matchup with American International. Kick off for that game against the Yellow Jackets will take place at Ronald J. Abow Field and is scheduled for 3:00 PM.Â
