Jersey City, N.J. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team continued their hot offensive streak, advancing to 3-0 on the season with a 5-3 win over Nyack at Lincoln Park in a non-conference match on Tuesday. For the first time since the 2016, the Chargers start the season off undefeated through the first three games.
New Haven saw themselves in unfamiliar territory to start the game off as they had to play from behind after a Nyack goal at the 23 minute mark.Â
The Chargers were, however, no strangers to adversity, evening the score soon after with a goal from
Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova)Â off an assist fromÂ
Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios).
Freshman forward
Alexander Gunnarsson's (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) first career goal came less than five minutes later in what would be the turning point in the contest. Gunnarsson later added an assist on a goal by senior
JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), his first goal of the season.
Santanach and Ezpeleta secured the victory with two late insurance goals, assisted by Viruet and
Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos), respectively. Guedes tallied two assists in the game, the second Charger to assist on two goals in a game this season.
Santanach's two-goal game is his second of the season and his five goals on the year are currently the most in the NE-10. Ezpeleta is close behind with three, all of which have been in the second half. The New Haven offense ranks first in the conference in total goals for with 14.
The Chargers outshot the Warriors 16-9, 9-6 on goal, but were even with four corner kicks each.
Freshman goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet)Â made three saves, all in the first half.
New Haven, now 3-0-0 on the season, will head to Springfield, Mass. for their first conference matchup against American International. Opening kick is scheduled for 3 PM at Ronald J. Abdow Field on Saturday, September 18.
