Springfield, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered their first setback of the season in a 4-2 loss to NE-10 conference rival American International College.Â
The Chargers offense started the game on a good note, scoring two early goals in the first half.
Tiago Vintem (Lisbon, Portugal/E.S. Pedro Nunes) was the one to put the Chargers on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal at the 8:52 mark. Less than a minute later, the Chargers once again called on Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova), who scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, stemming from an assist by Juan Felipe Tobon (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle).
The Yellow Jackets ultimately were able to pull ahead behind a three goal performance by Mathis Pilon St. Louis.
The Chargers held a 14-13 edge in shots but were outshot by AIC (4-0-1, 1-0 NE10) 10-5 in shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets also drew more corner kicks than the Chargers, 3-2.
Goalkeeper Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet)Â ended the game with six saves, all in the second half of the contest.
The Chargers, now 3-1 on the season (0-1 NE10), return home for NE10 conference matchup against the Adelphi Panthers. Opening kick is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Wednesday, September 22.
