TODAY'S MATCHUP
A game delayed by nearly two years kicks off on Saturday as the Chargers welcome Bowie State to DellaCamera Stadium to begin a home-and-home series, rehashing an all-time series that hasn't been played since 1995.

SCOUTING THE NEW HAVEN CHARGERS
New Haven provided a balanced offensive attack in its season opener against Franklin Pierce, racking up over 500 total yards on offense, with 188 on the ground and 320 in the air. The ground game had a familiar face leading the way with the 2019 NE10 Rookie of the Year Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall High School) starting off exactly where he left off adding another 100-yard game for his career. Overall, Logan picked up 104 net yards, averaging 5.2 per attempt with a game-high long pickup of 30 yards. The passing game saw two new faces lead the way with quarterback Connor Degenhardt (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and receiver Dev Holmes (Troy, N.Y./Troy) proving to be a reliable duo. Overall, Degenhardt threw for 320 yards, completing 21-of-34 passes, three for TD's. Of his 21 completions, he targeted, and completed, Holmes the most, with Holmes hauling in eight catches for 149 yards and a pair of TD's. Degenhardt also added a rushing touchdown, scampering in from 26 yards out. Defensively, the Chargers provided another balanced look with eight different players dropping at least four tackles. Among the highlights was transfer Jason Dooling (Sunrise, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) who had a pair of tackles, both of which were sacks that resulted in 12 yards lost.

SCOUTING THE BOWIE STATE BULLDOGS
With a senior quarterback leading the way, the Bowie State Bulldogs enter DellaCamera Stadium ranked No. 24 in the latest AFCA Top-25 poll. A transfer from Virginia-Wise, Ja'rome Johnson has completed 41-of-64 pass attempts in two games this season for 543 total yards and six touchdowns. He has also threw four picks. Overall, the Bulldogs enter with a 1-1 record, falling to Division I Delaware State in week 1 and defeating Saginaw Valley State this past weekend 28-19. As a team, the majority of the Bulldogs offense comes in its passing game where they are averaging 271.5 yards per game, while on the ground they average just 60 yards per game.

RIGHT WHERE HE LEFT OFF
Running back Shamar Logan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall High School) picked up in 2021 right where he left off in 2019, racking up 100+ yards for the sixth time in his career in week one with 104 on 20 attempts against Franklin Pierce. Right out of the gates in game one, Logan found his feet, getting the ball on the first three plays of the game where he quickly secured the first first down of the season just two plays in. Among his 20 attempts, four went for 10 or more yards, including one for20+ and the longest of the day, a 30-yard gain that set up at 48-yard TD pass on the next play.

HARMONY CLASSIC
The University of New Haven, Bowie State University and the Connecticut Chapter of the NAACP are excited to host the 2021 Harmony Classic. A week of activities will conclude with today's gridiron clash between the Chargers and Bulldogs. The Harmony Classic is an event that brings together UNH's initiatives for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the NAACP's mission to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons. The 2021 Harmony Classic is the second to be hosted on the UNH campus, and the sixth for the Connecticut Chapter of the NAACP. The Harmony Classic strives to Celebrate Diversity and Racial Harmony with a week of events.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
If you haven't visited North Campus recently you haven't seen the construction taking place adjacent to Charger Gymnasium. The site is the future home of the Peterson Performance Center, a state of the art facility that will house strength and condition, sports medicine, a new football locker room and meetings space with the ability to be tailored for the many different needs of all 18 varsity Charger athletic teams. The entire facility will measure 7,000 square feet and house 20 Olympic style weightlifting racks and a 60-yard turf agility and conditioning area. To learn more visit ChargerAthleticsFund.com.

NEXT ON TAP
New Haven will close out a season-opening three-game homestand on Saturday, September 25 with the annual Battle of the Elm City when they host crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. Coming into next weekend's game, New Haven has won 11 straight against the Owls, including the last 10 Elm City Trophy battles. Kickoff against Southern Connecticut is slated for 1:00 p.m.
