WEST HAVEN, CONN. – Freshman
Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) scored the game-tying goal for New Haven with 3:23 left in regulation, but the Chargers men's soccer team fell 3-2 in double overtime at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Wednesday night. The game winner ended a chippy yet tightly contested game in which the first goal wasn't scored until the 67 minute mark.
In time, Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead late in the contest but it was
Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) whose unassisted goal started the rally for the Blue and Gold.
What better time for Santanach's seventh goal of the year than scoring the goal that would eventually send the game to overtime after an Adelphi yellow card.
After Santanach's phenomenal goal, the match remained deadlocked until the 106th minute when the Panthers netted the go-ahead goal which was sent into the middle and wrapped around the goalkeeper into the right side of the net.
While scoring came at a premium, the Chargers outshot the Panthers 13-6 (7-4 on goal) while also drawing more corner kicks, 9-6.
Opportunity was there for New Haven but Adelphi goalkeeper Daniel De La Heras made some dazzling saves to quell the effort.
After dropping their second straight game, The Chargers, now 3-2 (0-2 NE10), look to right the wrong against Saint Anselm as they stay at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Opening kick is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 25.
