ROCHESTER, N.Y. - After falling in four sets to Stonehill earlier in the day, the New Haven women's volleyball team took down D'Youville in straight sets Saturday afternoon. With the win the Chargers conclude the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational 3-1 in the tournament and 6-5 on the year.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, a pair of players were named All-Tournament; senior outside Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) received a first-team nod, and freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) was named a second-team all-tournament honoree.
Akiona led the Chargers in both matches with 23 kills, just ahead of junior Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who nailed 19 hammers across the two matches. New Haven brought back its 6-2 offense with two different players splitting time at the setter spot. Junior Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) finished the day with a team-high 30 assists, with freshman Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) dishing out another 23.
With 29 digs on the day freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) helped to lead the Blue and Gold on defense, just three ahead of sophomore Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) who collected 26. At the tape, Akiona and senior middle Asiya Way (Denver, Colo./Denver East) both finished with a team-high three blocks on Saturday
