Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Rider Strikes First Goal of the Season as Chargers Fall to Adelphi

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) broke a scoreless drought less than two minutes into the second quarter as she drilled her first goal of the season, but the New Haven field hockey team fell short in its 2021 season opener against Adelphi on Thursday night.

Rider's goal came off of a field defensive clear by the Panthers as senior Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) intercepted an Adelphi pass and fired it to the top of the arc where Rider collected, turned and created space between her and her defender. She then fired a shot from about one foot inside of the arc that sailed through her defenders legs and to the right of the keeper where it slapped the cage.

The Chargers would maintain that lead through the remainder of the quarter, outshooting Adelphi 8-3 in the opening half. On the defensive end, graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) stopped one of the Panthers attempts.

Adelphi managed to knot the score at one just 40 seconds away from the end of the third quarter when Kaylee Deleva scored off a pass from Gianna McKeough. The latter of those two would strike again, scoring the go ahead goal in the 54th minute.

New Haven looked to even things out just under three minutes later when Natalie Carter (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had her shot blocked leading to a penalty corner for the Chargers, but they weren't able to convert.
