WEST HAVEN, Conn. – On a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium, the University of New Haven field hockey team stood strong but dropped a 4-1 decision to the No. 3 Saint Anselm Hawks, falling to 0-2 on the young season.
The Chargers lone goal on the afternoon came from junior midfielder Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) as she collected a batted around rebound off an earlier shot and lifted the ball over the heads of the defense and keeper where it rattled the back of the cage. The score for John is the second of her career at New Haven and knotted the score at 1-1 with under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
The score would remain tied at one going into the halftime break. The Chargers closed out the first half outshooting the Hawks 9-2, however Saint Anselm did have one shot that originally found the back of the cage called back.
Saint Anselm would regain a one-goal lead just over six minutes into the third quarter before putting the game out of reach with two more goals in the fourth quarter. The Hawks offense picked up out of the halftime break as they would go on to outshoot New Haven 7-3 in the final 30 minutes, however the Blue and Gold did hold a 12-9 advantage for the game. New Haven also had an 8-7 lead in penalty corners.
Graduate transfer goalkeeper Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) closed out her second game with the Chargers collecting four saves, all of which came in the second half.
New Haven will enjoy a brief hiatus before returning to action next Saturday, September 11, when they close out a three-game season-opening homestand with a visit from the Saint Michael's Purple Knights. The matchup, which serves as the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams, is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
