Women's Soccer Tops Post 3-2 in Double Overtime Thriller

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven hosted non-conference Post University as a part of the 2021 Opening Weekend Tournament. The Chargers forced an extra two periods of overtime before Mackenzie Myers (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) scored the final goal to secure their first win of the season.

Myers scored the only goal in the last meetup with the Eagles back in 2019. New Haven now remains undefeated against Post, dating all the way back to their first duel in 1995.

Sophomore, forward Dakota Cimetta (Coral Springs, Fla./J.P. Taravella) put the Chargers on the board first in the 19th minute of play. This unassisted goal was Cimetta's first collegiate goal, since the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The Eagle's quickly retaliated with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart, scored by Tassia Ferreria and Hailey McGee. The Eagles combined for a total of five shots on goal going into the halftime break, three of which were saved by Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin), a graduate student using her extra season of eligibility due to the pandemic.

The Chargers answered in the 48th minute when freshman, forward Meghan Dellea (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) also scored her first collegiate goal to lock the score 2-2. Dellea led the game in shots and shots on goal, with two each. However, Post outshot the Chargers 15-6.

New Haven's defense froze the score until the 100th minute when Myers' penalty kick found net, breaking the stalemate and securing the 3-2 victory.
