Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Georgian Court to Close 2021 Opening Weekend Tournament

The University of New Haven Women's soccer team defeated both opponents in its 2021 Season Opening Tournament, the Post Eagles on Thursday and the Georgian Court Lions this evening. The 1-0 victory over the Lions sets the Chargers up for a potential 3-0 record, with all wins being at home, as they take on Bloomfield College when they visit Kathy Zolad Stadium on Wednesday.

How it Happened
In Sunday's events, the Blue and Gold were aggressive straight off the rip. At the conclusion of the first half, the Chargers outshot the Lions 6-4, featuring five from forward Dakota Cimmeta. Sophomore, Macy Litalien (Fitchburg, Mass./Oakmont Regional) had a strong shot from 35 yards out that saw net soaring to the upper left in the 36th minute. The goal was Litalien's first collegiate-career score, and happened to be the only shot that made net all 90 minutes.

After the half, Georgian Court stepped up on the offensive end contributing a total of 10 shots in the second half as opposed to two attempts by New Haven. Half of the Lions 10 shots were on goal, intended to get past goalkeeper Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin). However, Davis did not allow that outcome.

As the final minutes remaining in the second half ticked away, a tremendous defensive effort from Kaitlyn Price (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) and Davis ensured that the 1-0 lead on the board for the Chargers was permanent.

What's Next?
The Chargers will host their third straight home game, welcoming the Bloomfield Bears on Wednesday night. This will be Bloomfield's first game of the season since their opener against Lincoln University in Pennsylvania was called off due to inclement weather. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. with all of the action available on the Charger Sports Network and live stats available at NewHavenChargers.com.
