WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Two second quarter goals was all that was needed as the New Haven field hockey team scored its first victory over a ranked opponent in program history, 2-0 over No. 9 American International under the lights at DellaCamera Stadium.
Senior's Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) and Taylor Geaglone (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) each found the back of the cage, with the goal for Rider extending her team lead to four, while the tally for Geaglone is her first of the season. Overall, New Haven held a 16-6 advantage in the shots column with none of the American International attempts placed on goal and all coming in the first two periods.
Chargers goalkeeper, graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) wasn't forced to make a stop on the evening, however collected her third clean sheet of the season. On the flipside, the Yellow Jackets keeper was challenged all night long, collecting nine saves, including six in the third period alone.
After an evenly played first quarter that ended in a scoreless draw, the Chargers broke through just over two minutes into the new period when a scrum at the top of the arc ended with Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran) flicking a shot over the defense and a diving AIC keeper.
Just over six minutes later the Chargers would add the insurance tally off of a penalty corner when Geaglone collected the insertion pass from Reilly Bialko (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) at the top of the arc and drilled her shot through everyone rattling the back of the cage.
New Haven will welcome second-straight ranked opponent into West Haven when the Bloomsburg Huskies come to town on Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. start. All of the action will be available live on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW with live stats available on NewHavenChargers.com.
