Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Chargers Snap Two-Game Skid; Beat Saint Anselm, 2-0

WEST HAVEN, CONN. - After a double overtime loss on Wednesday, the New Haven men's soccer team came up with a big victory over the Saint Anselm Hawks for their first win in NE10 conference play.

Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) put the Chargers on the board with his eighth goal of the season, high and right, off an assist from Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) at 26:53. Santanach, who has scored at least one goal in every game this season, reclaims the top of the leaderboard for goals scored in the NE10.

Santanach's goal was the lone score of the first half but it was Imanol Ruiz's (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain/Sagrado Corazon Carmelitas) late insurance goal, low and center, that secured the shutout win for New Haven.

Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) also assisted on the Ruiz goal, which brings his season total to four. Tano Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) was credited for assisting on Ruiz's goal too, giving him sole position of first in assists in the conference (5).

The Chargers continue to outshoot opponents, this time outshooting the Hawks, 12-7 (6-3 on goal) while also drawing more corner kicks (6-3).

Freshman goalkeeper Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) ended his second shutout of the year with three saves, tallying 18 total saves so far.

New Haven, now 4-2 (1-2 NE10), look to keep it going as the head to Albany, N.Y. to take on the Saint Rose Golden Knights (2-3-1). Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 4:00 PM at Plumeri Sports Complex on Tuesday, September 28.
