Chargers Defeat Saint Rose, 3-2, in OT Thriller

ALBANY, N.Y. - The New Haven men's soccer team won their second-straight conference game, 3-2, in overtime against the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Tuesday.

Tiago Vintem (Lisbon, Portugal/E.S. Pedro Nunes) scored the lone goal of the first half to put New Haven on the board first with a touch in restart from deep left flank off an assist from Tano Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College).

Graduate student Andreas Xenofontos (Niscosia, Cyprus/GC School of Careers) added to the lead at about the 55 minute mark with a diagonal header from 12 yards out from the right side.

Imanol Ruiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain/Sagrado Corazon Carmelitas), who scored in the last game, was credited with his first assist of the season on the Xenofontos header.

Two late goals, a penalty kick and a counter, forced overtime for the Golden Knights but freshamn Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) called game on an upper-left corner shot after a deflection in the box.

Pau Santanach's (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) six-game goal streak came to an end but after assisting on the final goal, his point streak lives on. Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands), who ended the last game with two assists, was also credited with an assist on the game-winner.

Desseno (6) and Gunnarsson (5) are now first and second, respectively, in the conference in assists.

The Chargers outshot the Knights, 15-13, but trailed in shots on goal, 9-6.

Goalkeeper Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) set a new season-high in saves with six stops. Kastoris now stands fifth in the NE10 in saves with 24 on the season.

New Haven, now 5-2 (2-2 NE10), returns home to host the Stonehill Skyhawks (4-4) on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
