WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior middle Asiya Way (Denver, Colo./Denver East) slammed a career-high 10 kills Thursday as the New Haven women's volleyball team took a straight set victory over Molloy. With the win the Chargers improve to 10-5 on the season and extend their winning streak to five games, that includes four straight wins on their home floor.
In addition to Way's 10 hammers, senior right-side Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii/La Pietra- Hawaii School for Girls) powered home a game-high 14 kills in the match, in addition to corralling nine digs. Junior outside Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) followed Akiona's 14 with 12 kills of her own, rounding out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Blue and Gold. Sophomore middle Emily Smith (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) and freshman outside Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) each contributed four kills to the New Haven attack as well, with Brown also adding two service aces and six digs to her totals.
Freshman setter Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) dished out 35 assists to five different players, to go along with two service aces and a pair of digs. Barry collected more digs than any other player in the match with 14 receptions across the three sets, followed by sophomore libero Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) who collected 10 digs in addition to three aces of the serve. Five players contributed to the blocking efforts for New Haven, led in that category by Smith who finished with a solo block and an assist that she picked up alongside Way, followed Barry and Brown with one solo block each.
As a team the Blue and Gold finished with its third-best hitting percentage of the season with a .337 mark, converting 44 out of 95 total attempts, assisting on 39 of those points. Overall, the Chargers earned nine points off service aces in the match, while also collected 45 digs defensively and four total team blocks in a game that saw just one lead change all-night.
