WEST HAVEN, Conn. - For the fourth time in the past six years, the University of New Haven Women's soccer team has started their season 3-0. This year the team had the pleasure of all victories being on their home field, Kathy Zolad Stadium. Wednesday's 3-2 defeat over Bloomfield College extends the Charger's perfect record before they stampede into conference play on Friday.
How it Happened
Megan Dellea initiated the Charger's offensive stint in the ninth minute with a goal to the lower left of the net, assisted by Mackenzie Myers (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown). Dellea also assisted Vickie Fleming's (Burlington, Conn./Lewis Mills) goal in the 22nd minute, which was the first of her collegiate career and stemmed from a failed clear attemp by the Bears defense. To finish the heavily offensive first half, Victoria Perez's (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Antonio de Padua) kick to the left of the net, assisted by Fleming, got past the Bears goalkeeper in the 42nd minute locking in a three-point lead before halftime.
New Haven's offensive capabilities in the first half were accompanied by tremendous defensive efforts. The Chargers held Bloomfield to only one shot on goal in the first half, which was denied by Paige Davis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin).
Of the seven shots in the second half from Bloomfield, Davis let two get by her in the final five minutes of play. Both goals were to the lower right of the net.
The three goals put up by the Blue and Gold in the first half provided a slight safety net in case their opponent found any in the second half. Luckily, for the Chargers three was enough as the final scoreboard read a 3-2 win for New Haven.
What's Next?
The Chargers embark on their first road and conference game of the season, taking on the Stonehill Skyhawks. This NE10 matchup will take place at the W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass. Kickoff is set to start at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 10th.
