This past Saturday, it all boiled down to the final 3:18 with the score knotted at 60 between the Saint Michael's and the New Haven. After six ties and nine lead changes all in the second half, the Blue and Gold pushed past the Purple Knights 65-61 with a big help from Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) in the final two minutes.
The Chargers gallop into Tuesday going 5-2 after a win and hope to add another one to their column.
Inside the Series
New Haven steps onto the floor of the Dana Center Tuesday with only 11 wins of 33 games played against the Falcons. Since the 2017-18 season, New Haven has endured a five game winning-streak against Bentley; their most recent victory being a 88-82 thriller in double overtime at the first round of the NE10 Conference Championship. New Haven also pushed past the Falcons earlier in that season when Bentley was ranked No. 17/18 at the time - the Blue and Gold limited them to scoring only 42 points and shut them down by 30.
Scouting the Falcons (9-2, 4-2 NE10)
As of right now, Bentley sits second in the Northeast division of the NE10 - behind Franklin Pierce. They come into Tuesday following a 20-point win over Saint Michael's on Jan. 5, and had their Saturday game at Southern Connecticut postponed.
Against the Purple Knights, the Falcons hit 27-of-61 shots from the field, shooting above their average of .328. They were also able to outbound Saint Michael's 48-25 which is significantly less than what they typically allow their opponents, 32.4 boards. However, they did struggle from three-point territory only connecting on 8-of-24 attempts - they normally average 11.3 per game.
Graduate point guard, Jordan Mello-Klein, leads the team in multiple categories: rebounds (92), assists (68) and steals (19). He is also second amongst the team in scoring with 175 total points this season, averaging 15.9 per game. In front of him is Mason Webb who has 181 to his name this season.
Scouting the Chargers (8-4, 4-3 NE10)
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) continues to impress. This past game he recorded a season-high of 31 points, just one short of meeting his career high of 32. Three games prior he also tallied seven three-point baskets - the most amongst the team in a single game this season.
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) continues to lead the team in scoring with 177 points so far this season while Majak leads on the defensive end with 72 boards and 38 blocks. Meanwhile, Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) has had his minutes on
the floor increased. At American International he saw 25 minutes on the court, then 18 when New Haven welcomed Saint Michael's.
New Haven is sitting third in the Southwest division of the conference right now, with four wins in NE10 play. Pace and Adelphi who sit in front of them also hold four conference victories.
When and Where
After starting their 2022 run 1-1, New Haven hopes to extend their record at Bentley University on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers are 4-2 on the road and following this one they will return home for two more, against Stonehilll and Adelphi, before traveling again.
Tuesday's game will be broadcasted live on the NE10 Network and live play-by-play statistics will be available on NewHavenChargers.com.
