How it Happened
This may have been the least amount of turnovers the Chargers have committed in a single-game all season, six, but their presence in the final minutes of the second half forced New Haven to turn their one-point advantage at the half to a seven-point stumble. They held the lead for 27 minutes in total, but in the end it was the Hawks that defended their own court 67-60.
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) led New Haven's bench in the first half with 12 points, and in due-time he was the game-leading scorer totaling 21 when all said-and-done. The Chargers were up by one, 29-28, after only shooting 32.4 percent from the field.
Lane was sent to the freethrow line after being fouled by Josh Menard with 4:29 left in the half. He made 1-of-2 to put the Chargers at their biggest advantage up to this point, 29-21. Tyler Arbuckle and Chris Paul went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and cut the Hawks deficit to only one.
With 13:55 left in the game, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to lock the score 45-45. In this run, Miles Tention had two made three-pointers, by the end of the night he led the Hawks with 17 points. Lane drove through the paint for a layup, capturing his 21 point season-high, and pushing New Haven past Saint Anselm ahead one possession. Owen McGlashan answered with a three.
Saint Anselm averages seven made three-pointers per game, against New Haven they put up 8 on 19 attempts. Tention made five of these, shooting 71.4 percent from outside the arc.
All five of New Haven's turnovers in the second half occurred after the midway point.
Arbuckle's first foul of the night sent Majak to the freethrow line, he made both attempts which cut New Haven's deficit to three with only one minute left, 63-60. Gustav Suhr-Jessen ran downcourt, after getting the pass from Paul, to put one through the basket deepening New Haven's trail.
Lane turned the ball over with 0:41 left, Suhr-Jessen stole the ball on the in-bound throw. This forced Ted Hotaling to call a timeout to strategize. Seconds later, Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) adds another turnover to New Haven's column.
Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School) sent Suhr-Jessen to the stripe who makes both shots and locks in a 67-60 win for the Hawks.
