WEST HAVEN, CT. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, 3-0, at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. After a season-high three goals as a team on Wednesday, the Chargers were held scoreless with only one shot on goal. New Haven held the Penmen without a goal for the first half but three unanswered goals in the closing half put Southern New Hampshire out in front.
The Chargers attempted four first half shots, as opposed to the Penmen's seven, with
Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet)Â taking three of them.
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands)Â was responsible for the only other shot in the half. None of New Haven's shots were on goal, however the Chargers recorded two corner kicks.
Following an uneventful opening, the Penmen struck first after one minute of play in second half. The goal was scored by Philip Hermann off an assist from Jaime Selva.
Less than three minutes later, Southern New Hampshire added another goal after Nicolas Gonzalez found the back of the net on an assist from Luca Shubitidze.
Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional), who tallied an assist in the team's season opener, attempted a pair of shots in the closing half. In the 52nd minute, Polletta put up the Chargers's lone shot on goal on a bottom center kick.
The Penmen would put the game out of reach with a late goal by Gabe Pinhancos.Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Lunn (Southington, Conn./Southington) made his first career start between the post as a Charger. Lunn, who was faced with 10 shots on goal, allowed three goals while tallying seven saves. While only 10 shots were on goal, the Penmen attempted 21 total shots in the game, 14 of which were in the second half.
Tens Haven, now 0-6-4, will continue the search for their first win of the season when they host crosstown rival Southern Connecticut for the final game of a three-game homestand. The Elm City showdown is set to start at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
