WEST HAVEN, CT. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to the Southern Connecticut Owls, 5-3, at Kathy Zolad Stadium on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. A brief flash of lightning delayed the start of the match but the rain couldn't stop the Elm City clash, which has been the highest scoring game of the Chargers' season.
Southern Connecticut struck first in the 12th minute as Yannick Hilpert found the back of the net on a rebound of header from Karim Said when receiving Leroy Best's corner kick
Hilpert tacked on another goal, not long after in the 28th minute, off another assist from Best.
The Chargers attempted two first half shots, as opposed to the Owl's ten, with shots coming from
Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) and
Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College). Kvarnback's shot was the only attempted shot on goal for New Haven while the Chargers trailed 4-0 on corner kicks.
Despite a two goal deficit entering the second half,
Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) split the deficit with a goal in the 53rd minute, assisted by
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands).
Hilpert's unassisted third goal of the game in the 59th minute gave the Owls a two goal advantage but Lindstrom answered with a goal just six minutes later off an assist from Gunnarsson. The goal was Lindstrom's second goal of the game and third of the year. Gunnarsson now leads the Chargers in assists after tallying two in the contest.
After 74 minutes of play, a scramble in the box resulted in a own goal when a Southern Connecticut shot ricocheted off a Chargers player. Less than a minute later, however, junior defender Lane-Turnbull scored his first career goal, assisted by
Devon Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional), to cut the deficit to one.
Although New Haven kept the game close at multiple times, the Owls ultimately pulled ahead after a late goal by Best, who scored almost immediately after subbing in.
The Owls outshot the Chargers, 17-6 (12-4 on goal), while also attempting more corner kicks, 10-0. Lindstrom and Lane-Turnbull led the team with a pair of shots, in addition to a second half shot by
Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional)
Freshman goalkeeper
Ryan Lunn (Southington, Conn./Southington) made his second career start between the post as a Charger. Lunn, who was faced with 17 shots on goal, allowed five goals while tallying eight saves. Lunn made four saves in each half as he has now recorded 18 saves in his first three appearances.
New Haven, now 0-7-4, will continue the search for their first win of the season when they travel to New York for the the start of a two-game road trip. The team heads to Syracuse to take on the Le Moyne Dolphins at Ted Grant Field on Oct. 8 with kickoff set to start at noon.
