GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell to the #17 Adelphi Panthers, 3-0, at Motamed Field on Tuesday night. After picking up their first win as a team over the weekend, the Chargers were blanked in their return to the pitch. The shutout loss puts an end to a two-game streak of the Chargers scoring three goals and is the seventh time the Chargers have been held scoreless this season.
The Panthers struck first in the 24th minute after graduate midfielder Matteo Lazzarini sent the ball into the box on a corner kick from the left side of the field. After bouncing around during a scramble, freshman forward Patrick Wilson attempted a shot on goal. The shot was initially saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet), however Adelphi forward Victor Castel found the back of the net on the rebound to give the Panthers the early lead.
Adelphi added to the lead with a little less than seven minutes left in the opening half when freshman defenseman Callum Walmsley scored on a header into the left side of the goal after receiving the corner kick from sophomore midfielder Matthew Lynch.
Going into the halftime break, the Chargers attempted five shots, as opposed to the Panther's 11, while Adelphi also recorded more corner kicks, 6-1.
Adelphi put the dagger in the game during the 62nd minute when junior forward Jesper Mikkelsen scored off a smooth feed from Lazzarini.Â
New Haven was outshot by Adelphi, 12-19 (5-8 on goal), while settling for less corner kicks, 6-7, five of which came in the second half. Freshman midfielder
Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) led the team with five shots, one of which was on target, while
Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora)Â attempted two total shots.
Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College),
Tyler Jasinski (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan)Â and
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) also attempted a shot on goal while the latter of the three holds the second most shots taken on the team this season.
The team's season shot leader,
Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet), who was recently named NE10 Player of the Week after combining for nine points between the last two games, was held to zero shots for the first time since their 2-1 loss to Dominican on Sept. 3.
Kastoris made his 11th start between the post for the Chargers, allowing three goals while tallying five saves. Kastrois now has 42 saves on the season, which are tied for fifth in the conference while his .712 save percentage ranks ninth.
New Haven, now 1-8-4, will return to Kathy Zolad Stadium for the conclusion of the regular season, starting with the Benley Falcons. Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, Oct. 15. All of the action available live on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 Now while stats will be available via NewHavenChargers.com.
