WEST HAVEN, Conn – Riding their three match winning streak and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) winning conference player of the week, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball returns home to Charger Gymnasium for their final non-conference match of the season before the final push for the conference tournament begins. The Chargers welcomed the Lions from Georgian Court to the stables for the weekday matchup back in front of the home crowd.
Series History
In just the 10 matchup between the Chargers and the Lions, New Haven commands the all-time series leading 8-1 heading into the match. The blue and gold entered riding a seven match win streak dating back to 2007, when in the Bentley Invitational the Lions beat the Chargers in five sets for their only win against New Haven. New Haven enters this match coming off three straight with a 3-0 sweep of rivals Southern Conn. then beating the Pace Setters and Post Eagles to improve to 11-8 looking to make it four in a row and eight straight against the Lions.
New Haven wasted no time welcoming the Lions to Charger Gymnasium with Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) setting the tone with a first point kill followed by Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) who doubled up the score with her first kill. Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) added a service ace to open up the set on a four point scoring streak. The hot start was just the beginning as New Haven never looked back, scoring by the bunches highlighted by a six point string of points led by Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) with a kill and a service ace from Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge). Paguia forced four errors by the Lions giving the blue and gold a commanding 23-8 lead. Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) added another kill to put it to set point before an error on the Lions made it 25-11 New Haven going up 1-0 in the match. The second set saw the Lions bounce back and jump out early on the Chargers. New Haven trailed 5-1 before Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) recorded a kill to get the offense for the Chargers going. New Haven started their streak down by four before the surge came from Macy Brown's (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) kill and Lindsey Piquette (Medford, N.Y./Patchouge) serving, leading to three straight and getting within one point. Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) answered right back to Georgian Court's kill with one of her own followed by a service ace from Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) followed by another kill from Brown before the Lions took their first time out. With their first lead of the second set, New Haven never looked back, scoring six straight with Emma Lazerson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) adding two kills. The Chargers closed out the set scoring three of the last four with Emily Smith (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) closing out the set with a kill to make it 25-17 and go up 2-0 in the match. The third was more of how New Haven opened up in the first set scoring the opening three points. Georgian Court never let the Chargers run away and kept things close before New Haven strung together five straight with back to back kills from Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), followed by a pair of kills by Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). Up late, the blue and gold closed things out late with kills from Emma Lazerson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) along with a service ace from Itzel Cruz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Notre Dame). Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) for the 10 time registered a kill, finishing the set and match for a 25-17 set win and sweeping the match 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led all scorers with 11 kills followed by Johnson. Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 33 assists and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) blocked five at the net.
