Winless No More! Kaehr Sends Victorious Chargers Home with Last Second Goal

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2022 season after scoring a pair of goals in the final minute of play, including a game-winner by freshman midfielder Lucas Kaehr (Armonk, N.Y./Indiana University High School). Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet), who scored twice in Wednesday's loss to Southern Connecticut, powered the Chargers to victory with another two goals and an assist. The win was New Haven's first since Nov. 3, 2021 when the team shutout the Bentley Falcons, 4-0. The victory was also only the second win ever for New Haven when playing the Dolphins on their home turf, and first since 1993, entering with a prior record of 1-7.

Following 42 minutes of tightly contested play, the Chargers struck first as Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands), after receiving the crossing pass from Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora), found Lindstrom in the middle of the box for the goal. The goal came on one of two shot attempts for New Haven in the first half, both of which were on target, while the Dolphins outshot them with four. Gunnarsson and Barnils were both credited with an assist, the former of the two now with three on the season.

The Dolphins, looking for the equalizing goal, answered in the 53rd minute with a left side goal from Le Moyne midfielder Tom Henne. After a trio of touches, Henne found the back of the net from just outside the six-yard box on a one-touch pass from Max Buesch, who received the feed from Cameron Stuart.

In the 63rd minute Buesch won the ball for Le Moyne near the right corner flag before he was fouled just outside of the penalty area, earning a free kick for the Dolphins. Jack Goodrich attempted the free kick, which ricocheted off the left post and into the net to put the Dolphins up by one.

Trailing with less than two minutes to play, the Chargers drew a penalty kick to set up Lindstrom for his second goal of the contest. Lindstrom's shot crossed the right side of the net to tie the game at two a piece.

As time dwindled down, the Chargers attacked the Le Moyne goal once winning possession back from the Dolphins. After Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College) sent the ball into the box, Lindstrom tried for a shot on goal from the right side but his shot was saved by Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr. Kaehr was the hero of the afternoon as he got to the rebound first and hit the ball into the left side of the net to put New Haven up 3-2 with five seconds left in the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) returned to the net on Saturday, allowing two goals while recording three saves. Kastrois now has 37 saves on the season, which are tied for fourth in the conference while his .725 save percentage ranks 11th.

New Haven, now 1-7-4, will look to run it back when the team heads to Garden City, N.Y. to square off with the Adelphi Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Motamed Field.
