WHAT'S ON TAP
After winnings its fourth season opening game under fourth year head coach Debbie Buff, the Chargers will immediately turn their attention to the Northeast-10 as they welcome Adelphi to West Haven for the 2022-23 NE10 opening game, the first of 21 conference games this season.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
After leading the Chargers in scoring last season, graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) began the new year just like she ended last year, setting a career-high in scoring with 30 points in the season opener against Georgian Court. Her co-captain Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) also opened 2022-23 the way she ended last season with her 15th career double double putting up 17 points and pulling down 13 boards against the Lion. Both were joined in double digits by senior point guard Kam King who also finished with 17 points as the Chargers won their fourth season opening game in as many attempts under head coach Debbie Buff. The Blue and Gold look to build off of that season-opening win where they also outrebounded their opposition and forced the Lions into 20 turnovers, turning those miscues into 24 points.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
Under the direction of second year head coach Sade Jackson, a 2014 graduate of Adelphi, the Panthers remain in search of their first win of the season after dropping a 59-49 decision to Post on Saturday. A pair of Panthers racked up double figures against the Eagles with graduate guard Ty'zhea Hawkins leading the team with 19 points. With the loss of leading scorer Emily Miccile, Hawkins returns as the Panthers leading scorer from a team that finished 12-12 in 2021-22, averaging 10.9 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY vs ADELPHI
·       New Haven and Adelphi meet for the 48th time in the history of the two programs on Wednesday night with New Haven leading the all-time series 25-22.
·       Despite holding a lead in the all-time series, the Panthers have won the last six meetings with the Chargers most recent victory a 58-44 decision in February 2018.
·       The highlight of the all-time series came in the way of an 11-game win streak for the Chargers which spanned from February 2005 to February 2010.
·       Last season, the Panthers won both meetings by a total of a four point margin with a 59-58 decision in West Haven and a 52-49 decision in Garden City.
LAST TIME THEY MET
In a game that saw nine lead changes and five ties, the Panthers took the season sweep over New Haven with a 52-49 decision at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y. Leading the Chargers in that battle was Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who finished with a double double of 22 points and 21 rebounds, the latter of which set a career-high. Defensively, New Haven held the Panthers to just 27.3 percent from the field, including 16 percent from beyond the arc, but the Panthers took advantage of 20 New Haven turnovers to score 20 points while scoring 16 points in the paint and netting 10 points on the fast break.
CHARGERS IN NE10 OPENERS
Since joining the Northeast-10 Conference (2008-09 season), the Chargers are 6-7 in NE10 openers. In the previous three seasons under coach Debbie Buff, the Chargers are 1-2. The NE10 opening win under Buff came in the 2019-20 season, where the Chargers closed out the year with a 12-7 conference record and the seven seed in the Southwest Division in the NE10 Championship.
HOT START
Just one game into the season and graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) is already making a statement in the Northeast-10 Conference, setting a career-high 30 points in the season opener to earn NE10 Player of the Week. DeBose surpassed her previous career-high of 24 points to earn the first 30-plus performance of her career against the Georgian Court Lions on Saturday night. The Wellington, Fla. native finished the day shooting 8-of-18 from the field with a three pointer, while impressive at the free throw line where she finished 13-of-14. In addition, DeBose hauled in five rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and picked off three steals.
UNDER YOUR WATCHFUL EYE
After just one game in 2022-23, the Chargers are already under the watchful eye of the regional poll voters, earning a spot in the receiving votes section of the first regional poll released on Monday. The poll includes 10 ranked teams and those receiving votes, of which the Chargers are one of five teams that are among those that the voters are keeping an eye on.
NEXT TIME OUT
New Haven will close out its season opening three-game homestand when they take the floor for their next game, welcoming the Bloomfield Bears to West Haven. Last season, New Haven took a pair of victories over Bloomfield, opening up the season with a 66-37 win on a neutral court before a mid-season 62-57 victory on the Bears home court. Tip off in the non-conference battle is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium with all of the action available on the Charger Sport Network, part of NE10 NOW.
