Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wire-to-Wire victory for Women’s Basketball in 75-54 Decision over Adelphi

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Pulling down rebounds and dishing out assists, the New Haven women's basketball team had all cylinders firing as they went wire-to-wire for a 75-54 win over the visiting Adelphi Panthers. With the win, the Chargers improve to 2-0 on the season while taking the conference opener for the second time under head coach Deborah Buff.

The Chargers finished with four players in double figures to lead the way, with graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) leading all players with 24 points, giving her 54 total in the first two games of the season. Seniors Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy), Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) joined her in leading the way with 16, 10 and 10, respectively.

King and DeBose also tied previous career-highs in assists with eight and five, respectively, while as a team, the Chargers dished out 17 helpers. On the boards, the Chargers finished with a commanding 44-21 advantage, with DeShaies completing her second double double in as many games with 12 boards.

DeBose was one of three players to tip the double-digit scale on the night, joined by seniors Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who each finished with 17. Among King's 17 points were a trio of three pointers, two of which came in the fourth quarter as she came up clutch in the fourth quarter providing a lead the Lions would be unable to recover from.

"We had great team defense tonight," said Deborah Buff. "We said we needed to dominate the boards and we did just that (44-21). This was a big opening win for us in conference play. We were lock in at practice last night and it showed today."

Overall, New Haven finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field, connecting on 27-of-53 from the field. Included were six three-point field goals with Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) and Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) each leading the way with a pair. The Chargers also finished 15-of-22 at the free throw line, where DeBose and King each went 5-of-6.

New Haven will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it closes out a season-opening three-game homestand with a non-conference match-up against Bloomfield on Saturday, November 19. Tip-off at Charger Gym is slated for 1:30 p.m. with all of the action available on the Charger Sports Network.
