COLCHESTER, Vermont. – Following a win in their final home match of the regular season sweeping the Assumption Greyhounds, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball Team took to the road for back to back matches to close out the regular season schedule first taking on the Hawks of Saint Anselm with a Friday night match followed by a Saturday match against the Purple Knights against Saint Michael's College. At 15-10 the Chargers looked to move up in the Conference standing ahead of the NE10 tournament set to begin on November 10 but the road started in New Hampshire and ended in Vermont.
Entering the match against the Hawks the Chargers held the all time series lead 13-7, but it has been the Hawks taking the last four matches against the blue and gold with New Haven winning their last match against Saint Anselm in 2018 where the Chargers won 3-2.
After a drive up to New Hampshire, the Chargers took to the court looking to snap their losing streak against the Hawks and continue their win streak to close out the season. Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) wasted no time adding her name to the stat sheet with the first point of the match being a kill to give New Haven the 1-0 lead. After an error by the Hawks, Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) added back to back kills to tie the set and then take the lead following an error by the Hawks. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) gave the lead back to New Haven after the Hawks tied things up before New Haven put up five straight points highlighted by kills from Reynolds-Martin, Brown and Johnson. The blue and gold were the first to 20 with Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) adding a pair of kills as a part of three straight to give the Chargers a five point lead. The rest of the set would go back and forth with both teams trading timeouts and points but the Hawks closed out the set with the last two points to take the opening set 26-24. In the second set the Chargers came out and scored the first point of the set. Similar to the first set both teams went back and forth trading scoring streaks with the lead never growing more than five with that lead going to Saint Anselm. Macy Brown's (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) service ace made the set one point, 24-23 but the Hawks scored the final point taking the set 25-23 and going up 2-0 in the match. Entering the third down by two the Chargers opened up the set just as they had done the previous two sets with a Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) kill to take the early lead. In mirror form of the second both teams traded leads and points keeping the set close. Saint Anselm grew their lead to five late but the Chargers battled back but the run was too late as the Hawks closed the set winning 25-20 and taking the match 3-0. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) led New Haven with 11 kills followed by Kylie-Reynolds-Martin and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) with 10 each as Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 35 assists.
Following the loss to the Hawks the Chargers made the short drive over into Vermont and spent the night ahead of their midday match against the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College. Looking to remain perfect against the Purple Knights and improve to 17-0 all time, the Chargers went in looking for redemption after their previous night loss to Saint Anselm. The Chargers came out slow in the set following the quick turn around from the night before and found their stride late in the set cutting the lead to three late following a streak of three straight but it was the Purple Knights taking the first set 25-20 and going up 1-0. After dropping the first set and trading the first six points, the Chargers jumped out putting up five in a row highlighted by an Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) service ace and an Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) kill. After the Purple Knights retook the lead, New Haven stormed back again with a match high seven straight points with three kills and a Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) service ace. Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) leveled the match with a kill to take the second set 25-20 and tie the match 1-1. In full stride by the third set the Chargers offense and defense were connecting, putting together scoring streaks and never trailing. The Chargers went on to win by 14 and were up by 11 before the Purple Knights scored their tenth point. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) closed out the set with a service ace, part of two service aces for her in the Chargers three point streak to close out the third set. In the fourth it was the Purple Knights that jumped out early on the blue and gold and got to 20 first. The Chargers trailed by six, but scored three before Saint Michael's called their first timeout of the set. Out of the break, the Chargers scored four of five forcing another Purple Knights timeout after the blue and gold took their first lead of the set. All tied at 23 Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) got it to set and match point before Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) combined for a block to win the set and match. Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) led all scorers with 12 kills with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) adding 10 kills each. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led with 22 digs and Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) led with 47 assists.
