DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Despite a late goal from freshman Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) the University of New Haven Field Hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision in Northeast-10 conference play against Mercy on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks had the first opportunity on the afternoon, with a quick goal in the opening minutes of the match, with a goal from Alyssa Sacco. Mercy had another opportunity in the third quarter, where they netted a goal from Kelly Rosenfield.
The Chargers continued to push the offensive, looking to finally hit the backboard and get themselves on the board. It would not be until the 50th minute of play, where Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) would find the backboard off a scramble in front of Mercy goalkeeper. Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) racked up her sixth assist of the season, while the goal from Erin Smith (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) made it her fourth goal of the season.
With a 2-1 difference, the Chargers continued to push to find the equalizer, but came up short when Smith's goal was returned shortly after by the Mavericks, giving them a 3-1 lead. As the final minutes came to an end, the Chargers would be unsuccessful in their offensive efforts.
Despite the outcome, the Chargers controlled a lot of the offensive efforts, outshooting the Mavericks 21-10, marking sixteen of those on goals. New Haven also got a total of 11 penalty corners on the afternoon. Goalkeeper Kierra Integlia, faced nine shots, making a total of 6 saves.
The Chargers now move to 8-9 in overall play, and 8-4 in conference play. The Chargers will move on to their final came in both regular season and conference play, when they return home to take on the Hawks of Saint Anslem. The game is scheduled to take place Saturday, November 12th, as they honor their seniors with a start time of 1:00 p.m. All the action will be available on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
