WEST HAVEN, CONN. - For only the second time this season, the University of New Haven men's basketball team took the court at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers stay undefeated at home despite a comeback attempt from Franklin Pierce as they defeated the Ravens, 67-56 on Saturday.
The game began in a stalemate as neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the first two minutes of play. However, Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) broke the scoreless tie with a driving layup on the dish from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School).
Following a misfire from Franklin Pierce's Brandon Kolek, Lane once again drove to the paint but this time found an open
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) towards the top of the key to give the Chargers an early 5-0 lead. After holding the Ravens without a basket for the opening 3 minutes and 46 seconds, Franklin Pierce finally cracked the scoreboard on a putback layup by Kolek.
Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./), who entered the game with a conference best 73.1 percent shooting from the field, put the Chargers up by two possessions after he finished at the rim with a two-handed layup after catching the lob from Lane on the pick and roll.
One of the team's leading scorers,
Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton), scored his first basket on a turnaround jumper from the left side of the paint. The Ravens cut back the early deficit with a fast break layup after a Chargers turnover but a step back two-pointer with 11:40 left in the first would bring it back to a one-possession game.
Justin Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.Y./St. Francis), who tallied a season-high 12 points against American International, broke a four minute scoring drought for the Chargers after hitting an unassisted floater in the paint. Lane's aggressive play under the hoop eventually led to a pair of New Haven offensive rebounds, the second of which turned into a putback dunk by Majak.
After pulling down his sixth rebound of the first half, the senior center added another two points to the scoreboard by hitting a hook shot on the feed from Olawoye. Despite a layup from Lane, Franklin Pierce went on a 7-2 run in the following two minutes before Olawoye put a stop to the Ravens growing momentum with a steal and a finish at the rim.
Majak missed a posterizing dunk but got back in time on the other end to block Kolek's layup attempt for his third block of the first half. The block led to a Thomas layup off an assist from Hendrick with a little less than two minutes in the opening half giving New Haven a 24-13 lead, their largest in the half.
With the shot clock expiring, Franklin Pierce's Evan Willey sunk a three-pointer at the top of the key to cut the deficit to seven but Lane answered with a driving layup to send the Chargers to the half with a 28-19 lead.

The suffocating New Haven defense, powered by Majak and Olawoye, held the Ravens to 7-32 shooting including 3-16 from beyond the arc. Thomas, the Chargers' three-point leader on the season, kicked off the second half with a three on an assist from Olawoye. The junior forward would return the favor a minute later as he found Olawoye for the layup to regain an 11 point lead.
After four unanswered points from the Ravens, the 7'1 Majak buried his first career three-pointer after starting his career 0-5 from beyond the arc.
With less than 11 minutes left in the game, Lane came away with a steal before pushing the ball up court to Perry who finished with a fastbreak slam.
Despite once having as much as a 13 point lead in the contest, the Ravens began to catch fire from distance, hitting four three-pointers on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to only three.
Olawoye and Majak drew a pair of shooting fouls, hitting a combined 3-of-4 to take a six point lead before Kolek hit a contested three to make it a two-point game.
A missed floater by Olawoye led to Franklin Pierce drawing a shooting foul on a three-point attempt with three minutes left. Although Shandon Brown missed the first attempt, he sank his next two to tie the game up for the first time in the entire contest.
Fresh out of the Chargers' timeout, Perry put New Haven back up after driving down the baseline to finish the layup in traffic.
Following a pair of open looks on the perimeter for the Ravens, Majak decided to roll the dice a second time, draining another three-pointer with a little over a minute left of playing time. The three put New Haven up by five but the Ravens answered with a backdoor layup.
With exactly one second on the shot clock, Thomas drained a fadeaway three to expand the Chargers' lead to 62-56. After a missed three from Franklin Pierce, Lane grabbed the board before tossing it up court to Perry, who finished with an emphatic slam to secure the victory.
As time expired, Lane put the finishing touches on a tightly contested game with a last second three to send the Chargers home with a 67-56 victory to stay undefeated at home.
