New Haven Survives Assumption in 74-73 Thriller

WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team survived a game-winning attempt from Assumption as the team pulled away with a 74-73 victory on Tuesday night. The win, which was their third straight overall and fifth straight in conference play, marked their tenth win in a row against the Assumption Greyhounds.

While Assumption first on the scoreboard, the Chargers went on an early 9-0 run which was kicked off with a three-pointer from Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), the Northeast-10 leader in threes per game. During that span, senior center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) caught the feed down low from Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) before flushing it home with a two-hand slam.

After two minutes of scoreless action, the Chargers added two more points to their lead via a pair of free throws from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School). Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) was called upon for an early appearance off the bench, igniting a spark for the Chargers offense. The senior guard scored on back-to-back layups, the second of which came on an assist from Olawoye.

Following a timeout by Assumption, the Chargers responded to a 5-0 run from the Greyhounds with a three-pointer from Olawoye, who put up a shot after receiving the extra pass from Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches).

Both teams began to find their groove as they each scored on their next three possessions. Lane tallied two assists during the stretch, finding Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) for his first basket before assisting on freshman Joshua Hopson's (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) first basket, as well. Hopson ended the streak of successful possessions with his second career assist after feeding Perry in the paint. Assumption's Rapolas Buivydas drained his three-point attempt before his next shot attempt was swatted away from Majak, leading to an Olawoye finish on the opposite end.

Starting with Olawoye's driving layup, New Haven went on a 7-2 run to take a double-digit lead over the Greyhounds, included in which was a three-pointer from Lane.

Cooper Creek of Assumption and Perry exchanged three-pointers prior to the Chargers calling a timeout. Coming out of the timeout with a 34-23 lead, Lane kept the foot on the gas, snatching a steal on defense before the graduate guard laid it in for two.

The Greyhounds cut the deficit down to six points after falling behind by as many as 13 points in the first half, but Thomas knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner with 30 seconds left to send the Chargers to the break with a 46-37 advantage.

Lane led the Chargers in the opening half with 12 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting while Perry and Olawoye followed with nine points each, the latter of the two also racked up four rebounds and three assists. As a whole, the team shot 18-of-27 (66.7 percent) from the floor and 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Greyhounds began the second half with a 5-4 run before Lane found Perry driving down the middle as the senior guard finished the contested layup and drew the and-1 attempt, which he successfully converted. On the very next play, Majak glassed a layup attempt while grabbing his own rebound, before passing to a driving Olawoye. Olawoye's layup pushed the graduate guard into double-digits, his second time this season.

Over the next 11 minutes, the Greyhounds outscored New Haven 12-8 while four different Chargers made a field goal including sophomore Justin Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.Y./St. Francis). Lane banked a shot off the backboard to put New Haven back up by 11, beating the buzzer on the shot clock for a three-pointer, his third of the night.

After Njavan Stewart answered with a three ball of his own, stemming from an offensive rebound by the Greyhounds, Lane found an open Majak on a near full court pass. The seven-footer slammed it home, drawing a foul on the posterizing dunk, sinking the proceeding free throw attempt.

Perry buried a three from the left corner to put a stop to an 8-0 run from the Greyhounds. The pass that set up the three, which extended the Chargers lead to seven, came from Olawoye for his fifth assist.

Despite another layup from Lane, the Greyhounds cut the deficit down to just one after Stewart sank a tightly contested three with nine seconds left. In the end, New Haven's defense held strong as Assumption misfired from deep as the ball bounced off the back iron to ensure a Chargers' victory.

Lane led the offense to victory with a season-high 19 points on an efficient 8-of-10 shooting. Perry and Olawoye also recorded double-digit performances, finishing with 17 and 13, respectively. The latter of the two also tacked on eight rebounds and five assists. Thomas's streak of double-digit scoring came to an end at six games as the junior forward finished with six points, stemming from a pair of three-pointers. Majak's streak of 10+ rebounds also came to an end at four games as he concluded with a 9 point-8 rebound effort while also swatting away three shots.

New Haven, now 5-2 (5-1 in conference), will take a break from conference play as they return home on Thursday to host the Lions of Bloomfield College. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. on Thurday, Dec. 8 at Charger Gymnasium with live play-by-play stats on NewHavenChargers.com and coverage on Chargers Sports Network.
