WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven men's basketball team picked up their first non-conference victory of the season in a 74-66 triumph over Bloomfield, after winning five streak games against their Northeast-10 counterparts.
Leading the Chargers on the night with 20-point performance was Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton), his most in a game since tying a career-high of 22 against Saint Rose. The senior guard finished with eight field goals including a season-high four three-pointers. A majority of Perry's damage was done in the first half where he racked up 17 points, which includes a streak of eight straight points in the final five minutes of the opening half. Perry jumped to third in the NE-10 as he is now averaging 16.9 points per game.
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) finished the night with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, just two days after leading New Haven with a season-high 19 points. The graduate guard combined with Perry to tally seven assists as the former of the two ranks third in the conference with 4.3 assists per game.
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) rebounded from a season-low last game with a 12 point performance tonight. The junior forward made four of his 12 attempts while adding two points at the free throw line. Thomas, who averages a conference high 3.2 threes per game, drained two of his shots from beyond the perimeter.
Although his streak of 10+ rebounds came to an end against Assumption, Majak bounced back by racking up a season-high 13 boards to go along with ten points for his third double-double of the season. Majak leads the team with 9.5 rebounds per game while also leading the team and conference in blocks with 20, swatting away another two shots on Thursday night.mMajak wasn't the only Charger crashing the boards as Thomas and Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) pulled in six rebounds each, a career-high for the latter, while the Chargers finished the night with a 39-35 advantage in that column.
New Haven came one point shy of having all five Chargers in double-figures as Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) finished with nine points on an efficient 3-of-4 shooting. In a one possession game with 20 seconds left, the graduate guard came through with a free-throw to stretch the lead to four points. After coming up with a steal on defense, Olawoye threw down a fast break dunk to secure the 74-66 victory for New Haven
Now 6-2 (5-1 in conference), the University of New Haven men's basketball will hit the road for one last game before the winter break as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Chestnut Hill Griffins in their second of three non-conference matchups. Tip-off for the return on the road is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Sorgenti Arena with live play-by-play stats on caccathletics.org and coverage on CACC Network.
