How it Happened
The Blue and Gold knew coming to Adelphi they were going to face one of the top scorers in the Northeast 10 conference. However on Saturday, he seemed to be the only one carrying the Panthers. Ronnie Silva, the Panther's 5-foot-9 starting guard, averages 20.5 points per game with a three-point shooting percentage of .380. He put up 25 points and shot 4-for-14 from three-point territory.
Silva scored the first points of the game, one of his four three-pointers. But Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) followed putting up back-to-back three's to lead 6-3. New Haven held onto their lead up until another one of Silva's effortless three's evened the score at 13-13.
Following the tie at the 12:11 mark, the score locked an additional two times before going into the locker room at halftime. Once at 9:11 after New Haven's top-scorer, Tavin Pierre-Philippe, put up two points in the paint. Then again with 1:34 left on the clock after Isaiah Salter missed his three-point attempt. Philippe rebounded the shot, ran down to the Charger's basket and laid a pull-up three, tying things 29-29. New Haven took the lead back from Adelphi and lead by four at the half, 33-29.
The Chargers defense, led by Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), limited Adelphi's offense to go 9-of-19 in the first half alone. The Panthers finished with an overall 36.1 shooting percentage. Majak had 16 rebounds and four blocks. He only needed two to beat Eric Anderson's school record of 75 blocks in a single season. The senior center has had 78 swats in the regular-season and did it all in his debut season dressed in blue and gold.
Over the course of the first four minutes in the second half, the Chargers went on an 8-0 run to bring the score up to 41-29. Their largest lead of the game, 14 points, occurred three times. On all three occasions they secured this lead from the stripe, twice by Philippe and once by Thomas. New Haven went 22-for-28 from the free throw line, the most attempts they've had since Nov. 13 against D'Youville, when all said and done.
With 30 points in the paint, and only five assists, most of the Chargers points were a result of driving to the basket and their 78.6 free throw percentage.
Locking in 74-62 victory over the Panthers, New Haven holds on to their second place slot in the Southwest division of the conference and will make a run in the conference tournament closing out their season 17-7 overall and a conference record of 13-6.
Inside the Box Score
- Four New Haven starters and one bench player ended the afternoon in double-digit scoring. Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School) came off the bench to put up a team-high of 19 points. From the striating five: Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) (14), Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) (12), Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) (11) and Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) (10).
- Philippe went 2-for-2 when shooting outside the arc. He was also the player sent to the free throw line the most, he missed only a single attempt of eight.
- The team finished with only five assists, a season low for them, this was mainly due to driving straight to the rim through the paint and a 22-for-28 free throw shooting performance.
- Adelphi was limited by New Haven's defense to a 36.1 field goal shooting percentage and only connected on 8-of-27 attempts from three-point range.
- Ted Hotaling offered a very short bench this game. The only players in rotation outside the starting five were Philippe, Sean Smith Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart High School), and Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's).
- Majak broke a school record in his debut season as a Charger. He finished the regular season with a total of 78 blocks, the most in New Haven history in a single season.
