Charger's Offense Explodes Against Chestnut Hill in 17-3 Victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of New Haven baseball team picked up a dominant win over the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Saturday afternoon in a 17-3 victory after being held with out a run the day prior.

New Haven 17, Chestnut Hill 3 (9 Innings)

After a strikeout started the game, Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) reached base after being hit by a pitch but was caught stealing before a groundout would end the Charger's inning.

Timothy Woodford (Smithtown, N.Y./Happaugue) got the nod on the mound for New Haven but faced early trouble. After striking out two and walking a pair, an RBI single to left brought home an unearned run to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead after one.

New Haven suffered another short inning after three batters went down swinging with Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) drawing a hit by pitch to avoid a 1-2-3 inning. Despite allowing a leadoff single to left field, Woodford locked up the rest of the side by forcing two groudouts and a lineout to third.

The Chargers got their first hit of the game in the top of third after Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) roped a one-out double to left field before advancing to third on a groundout. The junior infielder came across to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at one a piece.

After starting the bottom of the third with two groundouts, a single turned into a runner on third after a successful steal followed by a balk. Woodford escaped the threat by forcing a pop up to first base.

New Haven began the fourth inning with potential after Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) laced a leadoff single to left and Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) drew a walk. Lester advanced the runners on a groundout to second but a two-out pickoff attempt by the shortstop kept the Chargers at bay.

The graduate pitcher continue to put in work on the mound, sending the Griffins back on defense after going down in order.

The Blue and Gold broke it open in the top of the fifth after Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), who started the inning with a single to left field which would then turn into three after an error and a passed ball, was drove in after Reedy singled to center field. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) and Bianco both reached base on a single with the latter, a bunt. With the bases loaded, Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) plated Reedy on an RBI groundout to short before Taylor singled back up the middle to bring home another. Maurece drew a walk despite a pitching change to keep the bases full for Lester, who singled to first to score Bianco. The Chargers scored their fifth run of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice hit by Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) to plate Taylor.

Chestnut Hill answered after a pair of fielding error's brought home the leadoff man, who was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth. Woodford handed the hill over to south-paw Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), who allowed a double to center to only plate one unearned run after Lester picked off a runner on third. The graduate lefty caught the next batter looking to end the threat for the Chargers.

Both teams singled with two outs to avoid going down in order while both runners were thrown out on the bases.

Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) drew a walk in the first at-bat of the seventh inning but rounded all the way home after a throwing error following Robert Taylor's (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) single back up the middle. Taylor was then plated by a single to right by Maucere, who crossed himself on sac fly from Franquiz after Lester doubled to left. Reedy drove in another run on a right field single after Lester advanced to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Bianco drove one deep to left field for a three-run homerun, his first of the year, to give the Chargers a 13-3 lead. New Haven put two in scoring position immediately after as Budzik was plunked by a pitch and made his way to third on a Taylor double. Maucere recorded his second RBI single of the inning to bring home Budzik, giving the Chargers a 14-3 advantage after seven.

With the lead, Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) came in to face the back of the lineup as he forced a 1-2-3 inning including two strikeouts. The Blue and Gold then added to their lead after Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) scored on a sac fly by Wells after reaching on an error, stealing second and advancing on a passed ball.

Matthew Minio (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) took the mound in the eighth as he sent the top of the order down in order, including a strikeout to the two hitter.

Boug delivered the final blow to the Griffins as he roped a double to center field to plate Pinince and Maucere, who walked and singled, respectively.

Junior right-hander Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) was sent out to take care of business in the bottom of the ninth. After striking out the first batter, Silverman walked the bases loaded with two outs but punched out the final Griffin to secure the Charger's first win of the 2022 season.
