How it Happened
Last season, 2019-20, the Chargers run for the NE10 Championship came to a close in extra minutes to the Saint Anselm Hawks. In this years run to advance to the semifinals, the first game New Haven pushed into overtime, the ending was the same.
The Blue and Gold started the evening on a 7-0 run over the first two minutes. At 17:56 Chris Paul connected on his third three-point basket of the season.
From start to end, Chris Paul could not be stopped. In the first half alone, Paul was already at 24 points going 3-for-5 from outside the arc. Thought his entire season, the senior forward was 2-of-9 from three point range, he closed the night with four complete.
Paul's second three of the evening locked the score at nine with the assist coming off Miles Tention, who dropped 30 points to move the Hawks past the first round against Southern Connecticut.
The Chargers never saw the lead after Paul pushed the score in favor of Saint Anselm.
Off the fingertips on Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ), Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) found the ball in his hands laying the rock up off the glass. Those three points between the Chargers and the Hawks, was the closest New Haven got to the Hawks after their initial seven point lead.
The Chargers walked into the locker room at the half down five, 38-33.
After another two points from Paul, Olawoye ran down court and walked into a three right at the center. In their previous possession, Olawoye drove through the paint to put in a layup. His three point bucket put the Chargers two points away from tying Saint Anselm, 49-51. From this point on, the crowds presence help carried the Blue and Gold into their first overtime period of the season.
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) laid in a three from Philippe, Owen McGlashan retaliated by doing the same on the next possession. Thomas found the ball again to make a jumper, and the Chargers were still set back by two.
Paul attempted to move further in front of New Haven but was denied by Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) who blocked his attempt of a layup. Olawoye grabbed the rebound, sprinted downcourt and locked the score 56-56 with 10:11 remaining and the Chargers woke up.
The Chargers defense limited Paul to six points after that mark. Philippe saw Lane was open handed him the ball to finish the job evening the score at 71. Paul was given the ball with three seconds remaining attempting a three, which would have put Saint Anselm up one to advance. However, that was not the case. Paul's shot hit the rim and Philippe jumped up to grab the rebound just as the buzzer sounded pushing an extra five minutes.
The Chargers 5-0 run to start the overtime period was shut down when Paul hit his final three-pointer of the night. After Philippe committed his third foul, Gustav Suhr-Jessen was sent to the stripe making both shots diminishing New Haven's lead to one.
Lane committed his fourth foul and Tention was forced to the free throw line making both to push the lead back to Saint Anselm.
Locked up at 79 again with less than a minute remaining, Ted Hotaling called for a timeout. Philippe then attempted a jumper which was rebounded by Paul. With 0:02 left on the clock, Paul made his was to the rim scoring his final two points, which tallied up to 40 on the night.
Lane ran down court and turned the ball over right at the center, which was stolen quickly by Paul right as the buzzed sounded, with the final score reading 81-79.
Inside the Box Score
- This was the Chargers first game of the season that carried over into an extra period of play. In the 2019-20 season New Haven face Saint Anselm in the NE10 Championship game where overtime was also forced and the Blue and Gold ultimately fell 63-65.
- Chris Paul scores career-high 40 points. He went 16-for-27 from the floor with four made threes.
- Behind Paul in scoring for the Hawks was Owen McGlashan who made all but one of his attempted shots. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from both the three-point line and the free throw line. McGlashan missed just one lone field goal in the second half.
- Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and Tavin Pierre Philippe (Brooklyn, N.Y./Baldwin High School) combined for 42 points with 22 and 20, respectively. Philippe went 4-for-5 from three-point range.
- Lane and Majak each rebounded nine baskets. Olawoye grabbed eight.
- Over the night, New Haven shot 44.4 percent from the field. In just the forced minutes they went 3-for-10.
What's Next
Sunday night, the Northeast 10 Championship will be awarded to one of the remaining teams. But there is still hope for New Haven. Monday night, they will see if they received a spot to make a run for the NCAA Division II Regional Championship.
