How it Happened
The Chargers swam past the Le Moyne Dolphins, building momentum going into their next two at home this week. Coming off a 29-point loss to Pace, New Haven returned to Charger Gymnasium to a sea of fans as they made a splash.
The Dolphins broke off into a 6-2 run after the tip, offset by Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who laid one up in the paint on a fast break cutting their early deficit to two. Christian Davis, Le Moyne's starting guard and game-leading scorer hit one of his three, three pointers pushing New Haven back five.
Seven points, was the furthest New Haven got from the Dolphins in the first half when things were 15-7 and 13:04 to go before halftime. However, a combination of outside the arc baskets, from Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y. /Elmont Memorial High School ) and Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie), plus 20 points in the paint allowed the Chargers to walk to their locker room five points ahead of Le Moyne.
Fifty-two of New Haven's points were from inside the paint. With five three-pointers, 11 made free throws, and 52 total points in the key; the Chargers only had one two-point basket outside the paint.
After the break, the Blue and Gold got to work and solidified their biggest lead of the evening, 12 points, when Sean Smith Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart High School) made both attempts at the free-throw line. Slowly but surely, their lead was cut down to four when Olawoye sent Payton Hudson to the stripe. All free throws, from both teams, came in the second half of the contest.
New Haven started an 8-2 run with two minutes to go, staying 10 points ahead of Le Moyne. After the two minute mark, all of the Chargers points came from attempts at the stripe, Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) sealed the deal at the line closing the night out 80-74.
