WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team picked up a gritty 72-64 victory over the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The win brings the Chargers to a 7-12 record as they now rise to 2-11 in NE10 play. Leading the way for New Haven with a breakout performance wasÂ
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy), who dropped a career-high 25 points on 8-13 shooting while going 6-7 from the line. The junior guard also set a personal best in rebounds and assists with seven of each while playing a little over 39 minutes in the win. King wasn't alone in her efforts as three other Chargers racked up double-digit performances, including
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington), who ended with 18 points on 8-13 shooting, as well. What King started, Pergola finished as she closed out the second half in some clutch moments with 14 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter. Another noteworthy showing was from
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who enjoyed a bounce back game in the paint, recording a 12 point-12 rebound double-double. Deshaies has now reached 11 or more rebounds in 12 of the 18 games she has played in as she continues to place on the NE10 leaderboards. Rounding out the double-digit scorers is none other than
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community), who put up 15 in the win. DeBose has scored double-digit points in 16 of 19 games on the season as she averages 14.6 points per game, 10th in the NE10. Even though she was held to a quiet night on the scoreboard,
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) made some noise on the glass, pulling in 11 rebounds including two on offense. Her 11 rebounds ties a career-high for her, having last done it on Nov. 28 against Saint Thomas Aquinas.  Despite a season-high in points for the team, freshman forwardÂ
Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) scored the lone basket off the bench, a layup with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Golden Knights went 23-62 37.1%) shooting from the field and 8-20 (40.0%) from behind the perimeter. The Chargers ended the game shooting 30-61 (49.2%) while going 4-17 (23.5%) on three-point attempts. Saint Rose shot 8-14 (57.1%) from the line as opposed to New Haven, who went 10-17 (58.8%). New Haven forced the Knights into only 16 turnovers with King and Van Cleaf leading the defense with three steals each. DeBose recorded a steal and a block in the game as she has now managed a steal in 13 consecutive games. In addition to her double-double, Deshaies played tough defense, as well, totaling two blocks and a stealÂ
The Chargers turned those turnovers into 14 points on the other end while Saint Rose also scored 14 points off of turnovers. QUOTE FROM BUFF
"This was one of the best games we have played for a full 40 minutes," said head coach
Debbie Buff. "We shared the ball (18 assists) and our individual performances were some of the finest of the season; Kam [King] was stellar on both sides of the ball (25 career points), Ro [Deshaies] was outstanding on the boards (12 rebounds), Brie [Pergola] was a great floor leader and had some big buckets for us down the stretch, Cam [DeBose] scored in double figures and was outstanding on defense and Briana [Van Cleaf] pulled down 11 rebounds and came up with numerous 50-50 balls. Now we need to build on this for Thursday."
