Boag Helps Lead the Charge over Caldwell in Doubleheader Sweep

CALDWELL, N.J. - The University of New Haven baseball team picked up a pair of wins in a doubleheader with Caldwell on Sunday afternoon. The series sweep gives the Chargers to a 10-4 record to start the year.

Game 1 - New Haven 4, Caldwell 2 (7 Innings)

After splitting the series with Bridgeport, the Chargers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard to start the Sunday effort. With two gone, Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) laced a triple to right center field before crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

Junior Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) started on the mound for New Haven in game one, where he made quick work of the top of the order, striking out two of the three batters he faced. After the Chargers went down in order, the righty faced some adversity in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded and two outs, Pazulski came through with a strikeout to escape the jam.

The Cougars would tie it up in the bottom of the third after the leadoff man, who reached on a walk, came around to score on a wild pitch after another quiet inning from the Charger's offense.

Following a quick inning for both teams, which included another two Ks for Pazulski, the Chargers took the lead in the top of the fifth when Aaron Soucy (Brooklyn, Conn./The Pomfret School) drove in two runs on a single to left center. Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) set the stage with a pair of left side singles to leadoff the inning.

Caldwell wouldn't go down quietly, however, as the leadoff man began the bottom of the fifth with a double left center. A fielder's choice would get the leadoff man at third but a double steal a few plays later would result in a runner reaching third, despite a throw out at second. The runner would cross as a result of a fielding error, cutting the deficit to just one, as Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) was called upon to shut down the rest of the inning.

The Charger's only base runner in the top of the sixth came off a single by Taylor as he drove one up the middle with two-outs. Silverman punched out the first two batters he faced being forcing a pop up to short in order to escape any trouble after allowing a single and a walk.

Insurance came in the form of a one-out RBI single to left field which brought home Cain, who leadoff the inning with a single to right field. The junior closer secured the victory with a pair of strikeouts as he picked up his fifth save of the season. Silverman's five saves lead the NE10 as he holds a 0.77 ERA and WHIP with 18 strikeouts.

Pazulski added his third win of the year after allowing five hits and three walks through 4.2 innings while striking out eight. The junior's 24 strikeouts rank 15th in the conference.

Game 2 - New Haven 5, Caldwell 1 (7 Innings)

After the team started the series with a 4-2 victory, Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) got the nod for game two. The senior righty pitched two shutout innings for the Chargers, allowing only two hits while striking out three.

The Chargers struck first in the second meeting as Boag hammered a one-out homerun to straight away center field to give the squad an early 1-0 lead. Kevin McNiff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took the hill to start the third inning, where he struck out the first batter he faced on his way to a shutout inning.

Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) would relieve McNiff, following a 1-2-3 inning from New Haven. The Cougars would tie the game at one, however, after a runner scored on a wild pitch. The run was recorded as unearned after a fielding error with two-outs extended the inning.

Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) would draw a walk to stop the Chargers from going down in order, but offense continued to be hard to come by. Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) took the rubber for the fifth inning where he forced a double play after allowing a leadoff single. The sophomore forced a groundout to end the inning, stranding a man on second base.

The Chargers offense ignited in the sixth inning after Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) singled to left and Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) drew a walk to start the effort. After Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) layed down a successful sacrifice bunt, Taylor would plate Franquiz on a sac fly to center field. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) tagged on another run, as well, with an RBI triple down the right field line.

Allen followed it up by making quick work of the Cougar's back order including a strikeout of the leadoff man. Lester and Boag started the seventh with a pair of one-out singles after Bianco, who was pinch hitting, was thrown out trying to leg out a double. A failed pickoff attempt would lead to Lester crossing home before Franquiz singled to center to bring home Boag.

Gary Costello (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was called on to close out the game with a four run lead as he threw a scoreless inning while allowing a hit and striking out one. Allen, who allowed only teo hits through two innings, was credited with the win in game two.
