WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped their third straight game against the Pace Setters, this time in a 6-15 loss. With the loss, their biggest of the season, the Chargers now fall to 11-7 on the year.
Pace 15, New Haven 6Â (9Â Innings)
After the team dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader with Pace, Timothy Woodford (Smithtown, N.Y./Happaugue) took the mound to start the final game of the series. The Chargers found themselves down early, however, as the Setters racked up a 7-0 lead after two innings.
The Chargers nearly had an answer in the first inning after a leadoff walk from Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and a single through the right side by Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell). Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) would later draw a walk with two outs to load the bases by New Haven couldn't find open grass as three runners were left on base.
Although the graduate righty went only 1.2 innings, only one of the seven runs that came across were earned. Woodford allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two batters.Â
Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth)Â came in for relief, providing a solid outing in which he threw 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and one walk.Â
After three straight 1-2-3 innings, New Haven got their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore second baseman Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham), who worked his way to a full count with two away, drove one deep to center field to cut the deficit to six.
The Setters, who recorded a homer of their own, broke open the game in the following inning. Between two pitchers, Pace racked up eight hits and one walk while six runs came across.
New Haven would score another run in the sixth inning after Budzik started things off with a walk. Before a wild pitch advanced Budzik to third, outfielder Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) roped a single to left field. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) drove one deep enough to center field that the run would be able to tag up, making it a 2-13 game.
Pace kept their foot on the gas, scoring another two runs across the seventh and eighth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) recorded a strikeout to escape the jam and give the Charger's their first shutout inning since the fifth inning.
Down by 13, the Chargers were down to their final three outs as they looked to make a last ditch effort at a comeback. Cain lead off the inning with a single down the third base line before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) drew a walk, Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) roped one to left field to bring in Cain. Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck)Â brought in a second run on a single to left field, himself.Â
After Franquiz singled to juice the bases, Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) drew a four pitch walk to plate a run. A great defensive play by the Setters would catch the Chargers in a double play but one final run would come across as Zack Pincince (Woonsocket, R.I./North Haven (Conn.)) legged out a single to shortstop to score Boag.
Franquiz, Taylor and Cain led the offense with two hits each, with the former being the only one to record an RBI. The loss sends the Chargers to an 11-7 record on the season as they look to break a three game losing streak.
