Bianco Homers as Chargers Edge Out Frostburg State, 5-4

CARY, N.C. - The University of New Haven baseball team picked up another win in their North Carolina debut, this time defeating the Frostburg State Bobcats, 5-4, as Silverman closed out the game with a save.

Frostburg State 4, New Haven 5 (9 Innings)

Senior right-hander Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) made his second start of the season, putting in work early by forcing a 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts.

The Charger's offense picked up where they left off, taking an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) drove one deep to left field to put New Haven on the board first. Junior outfielder Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) then reached base on an error before scoring on a single to right field by Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon).

Eletto thew another shutout inning in the second, allowing one hit while punching out another, his third swinging K of the game. The Chargers couldn't capitalize with a two-out base runner, after Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) reached via walk, as a fielder's choice would end the inning.

The Bobcats began to threaten with two runners in scoring position, both singled to get on, but Eletto forced a groundout with two down to escape trouble.

After two Chargers were caught looking, Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) drew a walk, his fifth of the year, before Taylor and Maucere hit back to back singles to juice the bases. Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) then roped a two-out double to left field to clear the diamond as the Chargers took a 5-0 lead.

Eletto continued to work through the Bobcat's lineup as he recorded another 1-2-3 inning with another two strikeouts. New Haven suffered a similar inning after going down in order with two going down by way of the K, as well.

Frostburg finally broke through after a fielder's choice and a single put runners on first and second with one out. One runner was brought home on a single but the batter was thrown out at second by right fielder Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy).

The Chargers left two runners on base, after Taylor successfully bunter and Maucere drew a walk, as a a fly out would end New Haven's chance at adding more insurance.

The Bobcats cut the deficit with a three-run homerun after the first two batters singled to start off the inning. Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was called from the bullpen in relief, escaping any further damage with a swinging strikeout and a lineout after walking one and hitting one.

After going down in order, the Charger took the field again as Cain stranded another runner on third after forcing back to back pop ups to shortstop to keep the lead intact. The Chargers couldn't add to their lead in the bottom of the seventh even after Wells reached on an error to start the inning.

Adam Silverman came in to close it down for New Haven, striking out three, all swinging, while walking one. Maucere laced a single back up the middle, his third single of the game, but the Chargers were still held to a one run lead going into the final inning.

Silverman stayed on the mound for the chance at a six-out save as he forced a 1-2-3 inning with the second batter he faced going down swinging. Eletto was credited with the win after going five innings strong, allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out five. Silverman went two full innings, not allowing a hit while walking one in addition to four strikeouts to get the save.
