Taylor and Eletto Shine in Game One as Chargers Split Doubleheader with Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team split the doubleheader with the Le Moyne Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. Taylor's four hit performance lifts the Chargers to a 3-2 victory in game one before falling to the Dolphins, 1-0, in game two.

Game 1 - New Haven 3, Le Moyne 2 (9 Innings)

To start the weekend series, the Chargers sent their ace, Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley), out to the mound to get things started. The senior righty received early support in the first inning when Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) drove one deep to right field with two outs, both strikeouts. The homerun, his first of the year, gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. Looking to build on the momentum, Eletto retired the side in order, striking out the first and last batters of the inning.

Josh Lester's (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) one-out single down the right field line was the Charger's only hit of the second inning but Eletto tossed another shutout inning while recording two more punchouts.

Despite Taylor poking a single through the left side, his second hit of the game, New Haven's offense was held off the scoreboard after a fly ball ended the side. Although he forced a lineout for the first out of the third, Eletto faced adversity after a pair of walks and a single would load the bases for the Dolphins. Only one run would come across during the one-out threat, which came from a walk with the bases loaded, but Eletto bounced back with two swinging strikeouts.

After reaching on a throwing error with one out, Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) was called out on interference on what became a double play. Eletto recorded a strikeout to start the bottom of the fourth prior to allowing a single to left field. The senior tallied his eighth strikeout of the game before a double to right field advanced both runners into scoring position. A walk would juice the bases for the second straight inning but once again Eletto prevailed, forcing a fielder's choice.

The Chargers went down in order in the fifth, however, Eletto returned the favor by working through the top of the Dolphin's lineup, forcing three groundouts.

With one away, Taylor delivered his third hit of the game, a double down the right field line. After Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) reached on an error and Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) flew out, Taylor would cross home on a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Chargers a one run lead. The lead was short lived, in spite of that, as a single to left field would be enough to bring in the runner, who reached on a single to right field and advanced on a wild pitch. Although the run came across, the inning ended there as the runner was thrown out trying to stretch out the single.

Lester kicked off the top of the seventh with a single through the right side before Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham) followed with a one-out single of his own. Even though the Chargers couldn't capitalize, Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who relieved Eletto, retired the Dolphin's side in order.

Heading into the eighth inning, Taylor looked to stay hot at the plate. The junior center fielder gave the Chargers the lead after homering, once again, to right field. New Haven continued to threaten after Wells drew a walk and Lester roped a single down the right field line, his third hit of the game. The runners on the corners would be left stranded after a fly out ended the inning with New Haven regaining the lead.

After Silverman retired the side in order, for the second straight inning, the Chargers would follow suit in the top of the ninth. The Dolphins began the bottom of the ninth with a single to left center before advancing into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Silverman recorded a strikeout and allowed a walk prior to forcing a ground out back to the pitcher's mound to end the game.

Taylor finished the game with four hits, including two homeruns and a double while Lester tallied three hits, as well. On the mound, Eletto allowed five hits and four walks across six innings while striking out nine batters. Silverman, who was credited with the win, allowed one hit and one walk through three innings.

Game 2 - New Haven 0, Le Moyne 1 (7 Innings)

Looking for a sweep in the doubleheader, the Chargers called on Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) to start the seven-inning second game.

The Chargers would get the first base runner of the second slate after Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) singled through the left side with one out. The inning would come to an end for New Haven after the senior shortstop was caught stealing.

Pazulski started things off with a strikeout of the leadoff man before allowing a single to right field. After successfully stealing second, the runner advanced to third on a throwing error. A pair of walks would load the bases but the junior righty forced an unassisted ground out to first base to extinguish the threat.

Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) drew a walk with one out in the top of the second prior to successfully stealing second base, his fourth steal of the season. The next two batters would go down by way of the K, as the Chargers would be kept of the board.

Despite yielding a walk and a single to start the bottom half of the second, Pazulski forced a pop up, a ground out and a fly out to escape the early jam.

The Chargers went down in order during the third inning but Pazulski returned the favor, while recording his first strikeout of the game.

Taylor, who went 4-4 in game one, legged out a single to shortstop with one out to begin the fourth inning. Taylor would advance into scoring position after Cain drew a walk but a strikeout would, once again, end the opportunity for New Haven.

The Dolphins began their half of the inning with a single to left field but the junior righty would record another strikeout to follow it up. Despite hitting a batter, Pazulski forced a pair of fly outs to keep the game tied at zero.

After retiring the Chargers in order, the Dolphins finally pulled ahead after a single to left field would plate the leadoff man, who reached on a single to short. Although Le Moyne drew a two-out walk to load the bases, a fielder's choice would limit the damage and keep the game within one run.

The Charger's offense continued to struggle in game two as the offense went down in order, once more, in the top of the sixth. Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) relived Pazulski heading into the bottom half, recording a 1-2-3 inning after forcing two fly outs and an unassisted groundout to first.

Trailing by one with three final outs, the Chargers looked for their offense to click to avoid a loss. Bianco drew a walk with one away before advancing to second base on a groundout by Lester. He would be left stranded, however, as the New Haven would drop game two the Dolphins, 1-0.

Pazulski, who was credited with the loss, allowed five hits and five walks across five innings while striking out three. In a low scoring affair, the Chargers lone two hits came from Budzik and Taylor while Bianco reached base twice on balls.
