Tennis Drops Pair of Weekend Matches

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's tennis team took a set-back this weekend, losing both matches of the only doubleheader of the spring season. The Chargers also took their first home loss of the spring season. The Wildcats outscored the Chargers 7-0 on Saturday afternoon, and the following Sunday, Bryant shot down the Chargers 6-1.

SATURDAY – WILMINGTON 7, NEW HAVEN 0

The biggest fight of the day for the Chargers came from Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) at No. 4 singles. The junior put up a tight score with her opponent in all three sets but couldn't take the match. Banks won her first set of the day 6-3 but split with her wildcat opponent which pushed a third set. Banks lost a heartbreaker in the third by only 2 points (10-8).

Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) also put up a good fight in the No. 6 singles competition, putting up four points in both of the sets she played. In the No. 1 singles, Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) scored a total of six points on the board over the course of her two sets, but it wasn't enough to outmatch the Wildcats.

SUNDAY – BRYANT 6, NEW HAVEN 1

Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) came back with a vengeance after the previous tough loss. Banks and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) took the lone win of the day for the Chargers in the doubles match. The sophomore pair shot down their No. 3 doubles Big East opponent 6-2, which was one of the biggest point differentials of the day for either team.

Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) got back to her winning spirits in the No. 5 singles competition. In the lone singles win of the day, she fought through two close sets, and ended up victorious in both at 7-5 in each.

Karim Carerras and Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) put five and six points on the board respectively in their own singles competitions, but they didn't add up to a victory in the end.
