Following a one-goal lead for New Haven at the half, the Chargers were outshone by Southern New Hampshire's eight goals in the final 30 minutes of play, as the Blue and Gold fall 14-9 to their NE10 opponent.
How it Happened
In the first half alone, New Haven grabbed the lead on five accounts. To start things off Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) put her team on the board first in the initial three minutes, after receiving the pass from Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier).
Shelby Cole of SNHU went back-to-back in scoring to steal the lead away from the Chargers. Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) ironed out the score board 2-2 when she scooped a ground ball following the save off Marina Skelly's (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) shot at the net, which was saved by the Penmen goal keeper, Caela McCartney.
Skelly found the back of the net for her 23rd goal of the season to even out the score 3-3. Just moments later, with 0:44 on the clock until the second quarter, she was given the pass from Levitt and brought New Haven up one leading into the next period.
The next two quarters, the Penmen scored in the first minute, each time leveling out the score. To start the second quarter Skylar Renaud locked in a 4-4 score, and after halftime Courtney Cronin locked in a 7-7 reading. Going into the half, the Blue and Gold had a one-goal advantage, but that vanished just 49 seconds into the second half.
Cronin's mark started a 3-0 scoring run offset by Skelly's goal, which cut the Chargers deficit from two to one. The Penmen went on another 3-0 run which propelled into the final quarter, this time Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) cut the Charger deficit from four to three.
Antler's goal was the final for New Haven with 12:55 still remaining. The Blue and Gold were unable to connect on the seven shots attempted after, and ultimately allowed the Penmen to score two more times, ending the afternoon on a 14-9 loss.
