Women’s Tennis Wrapping Up Another Successful Season With Home Match versus Holy Cross

THE LEAD

The New Haven women's tennis team will play their final match of the season, and a last collegiate match for many seniors and graduate students. The Chargers will host Holy Cross at the New Haven Tennis Courts, with the first serve scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (9-10, 5-5 NE10)

Prepare for an emotional day, as the Chargers will have to say goodbye to Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School), Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs), Charlotte Vick (Englewood, Fla./Evansville North (Ind.)), and Lilia Rodriquez after they play their final matches in the blue and gold uniforms.

Hoping to leave on a high note - The graduate student duo of Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) and Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) are coming off of strong performances in the doubles competition from the last match. The pairing beat Post 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles.

The underclassmen are also looking to end this season positively moving into the Fall. Keep an eye on Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown), who both earned a win over Division I competition Bryant as a duo in the doubles. The following match, Banks went on to win the No. 4 singles against Post, shutting out her competition in the second set of her individual match. Orlando didn't just have a shutout set but a sweep of the No. 5 singles as well. Sophomore Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) is also coming off of a sweep in the No. 6 singles.

SCOUTING THE HOLY CROSS CRUSADERS  (6-12, 0-5 PATRIOT LEAGUE)

The Crusaders will be playing their final match of their regular season before heading on to the Patriot League Playoffs. Holy Cross is coming off of a 7-0 loss at Providence, the same result the Chargers had at Providence as well. The Crusaders will be looking to get back in the win column for Conference play. However, New Haven is looking to put up a good fight.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

If you haven't visited North Campus recently you haven't seen the construction taking place adjacent to Charger Gymnasium. The site is the future home of the Peterson Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will house strength and condition, sports medicine, a new football locker room and meeting space with the ability to be tailored for the many different needs of all 18 varsity Charger athletic teams. The entire facility will measure 7,000 square feet and house 20 Olympic style weightlifting racks and a 60-yard turf agility and conditioning area. To learn more visit ChargerAthleticsFund.com.
