The University of New Haven women's lacrosse program finished its 2022 campaign at home over the No. 20 Saint Anselm Hawks in a thrilling 10-6 fashion. They hit the road for their final two contests before NE10 Championship play which is set to begin May 4.
How it Happened
After a scoreless start, the Saint Anselm Hawks went into the second quarter with a 1-0 advantage as Taylor Cobain scored man-up in the final 0:01. In the entire first quarter, Buscemi tallied six saves, which would later on become 18, on six total shots for the Hawks.
Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) scored first for the Chargers to open up the second period of action, assisted by Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy). Saint Anselm retaliated by scoring less than two minutes later to give them their second lead, which all-in-all would be their last lead of the game.
New Haven sparked a 3-0 run before going into halftime. First Antler leveled things out 2-2. Then Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) was sent to the 8-meter arc and found net on a free position attempt. Bailey concluded this second period run by scoring her 50th goal of the season. The freshman went on to score two more goals down the stretch, finishing with a game-high of three.
The Blue and Gold shut out Saint Anselm in the third quarter, 4-0. Saint Anselm was only able to attempt four shots towards Buscemi, but the Hawks had to get through the stellar defense of Megan McLoughlin (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot), Justine Doyle (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy), and Laura Agbayani (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme).
Things got a little dicey in the final quarter of play. The Hawks started off scoring three straight in just a matter of four minutes, making the score 8-5 with the lead still in the fingertips of the Chargers. Bailey added one more to their goal column finishing out on her 53rd goal of the season. Saint Anselm bit back, so the margin remained three goals separating the Hawks and the Chargers.
As the clock ran down, Acquavita had the last say after the pass from Bailey landed in the net of her stick and found its way past Grace Young. The final buzzer sounded and the New Haven Chargers finished their competition at home with a final score 10-6 on senior day.
