COLCHESTER, Vt. – The New Haven women's lacrosse team kept its winning streak in tact as they opened up a two-game roadtrip that will close out the regular season with a 17-9 win over Saint Michael's on Wednesday afternoon.
Leading the Chargers on the afternoon was freshman Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who extended her team lead in goals adding six more against the Purple Knights. The six goals for the Cheshire, Conn. native is matches her season high which she has accomplished four time this season, including twice in the current three-game win streak. In addition, she has scored a hat trick or better in 13 games this season.
Following Bailey in leading the way was junior Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) who finished with a career-high in goals and points with three and five, respectively. Classmate Annie Aquavita also added a hat trick, finishing with four goals, while Camryn Antler rounds out the multi-goal scorers with a pair.
Between the pipes, sophomore Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), the reigning IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week finished the day with four saves, facing a total of 18 shots from the Purple Knights.
Saint Michael's started out the contest with a defensive stand, taking a 3-1 advantage into the first quarter break. New Haven responded by scoring the next two goals to knot the game at three. The Purple Knights responded to that by notching back-to-back of their own to regain a two goal advantage.
New Haven followed by rattling off three straight with the third from Rishmany giving the Blue and Gold their first lead of the afternoon. The two squads would end up knotted at six and seven goals, before Bailey scored with six seconds remaining until the halftime break to give the Chargers an 8-7 lead at the intermission.
The Chargers came out of the break scoring the first five goals of the third quarter to take a 13-7 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Including what was now a six unanswered goal rally, the Chargers would go on to outscore Saint Michael's 10-1 before the Purple Knights closed out the scoring with a goal three minutes into the fourth quarter. Neither team would score over the final 12:03 of action.
New Haven will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a matinee contest at Bentley. Opening draw between the Chargers and Falcons is slated for 12:00 p.m.
