Four Fourth Quarter Goals Not Enough to Surpass Bentley, New Haven Falls 15-13

WALTHAM, Mass. - To close out regular season competition, the Chargers made an effort late in the fourth quarter in attempt to shave away their six goal deficit. However four goals were not enough to come back to West Haven with another win before the Blue and Gold continue on to Northeast-10 Championship play.

How it Happened
New Haven made their way to the scoreboard first after just four minutes of action when Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) scored after a successful clear. Bentley retaliated by scoring four straight. The Chargers went on a run of their own scoring three over the span of just two minutes.

Scoring in this little run was Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), her first of the game, followed up by two free position goals: one from Acquavita and one from Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier).

That wasn't acceptable in the eyes of the Falcons. Just a 1:18 before the end of the first quarter, Bentley had to shift the lead back into their favor 5-4.

Bailey leveled things out 5-5 after she scooped a ground ball, ran down field and into the scoring third. For the remaining ten minutes before halftime, the Falcons offense picked up tremendously, outscoring the Chargers 6-2. Both of New Haven's goals after Bailey's game-tying shot were a result of free-position attempts from Acquavita and Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy).

After the break, Bentley extended their lead to seven goals after putting up three and holding New Haven scoreless until the final three minutes of the third quarter. Efforts from Bailey and Antler shortened the Chargers deficit 14-9 as they headed into the final 15 minutes.

A five goal setback was increased to six as Bentley scored on the first possession in the fourth and final quarter.

New Haven made an attempt to comeback a little too late as they were still down five goals after Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) scored with 6:51 on the clock. Antler, Bailey, and Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) each scored in the final minutes but the Chargers four goals in the final quarter was not enough to take the lead away from Bentley.

Inside the Box Score

Bailey scored a game high of four goals. Her second of the afternoon tied the score at 5-5 while her final goal was the last of the 60 minutes, cutting New Haven's deficit to two.

Also scoring for the Chargers were Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) and Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), each with three. Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier), Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang), and Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) each tallied one.

Two of Acquavita's goals came from shots at the 8-meter arc. Overall New Haven went 5-for-10 on free position attempts.

The Falcons out shot New Haven 34-35. In the circle Bentley was also more dominant on draw controls, winning 19 to New Haven's 13.

Caprioli won seven of those draw controls for the Chargers, also helping out was Bailey who grabbed four for herself.

Defending the net for New Haven, gabby Buscemi tallied double-digit saves with 11 on 26 shots on goal.
