Chargers Dominate AIC for Spring Home Opener

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's tennis team opened up their first home match of the spring season with a dominating 6-1 feat over American International. The match included shutouts from both the doubles and singles competitions - a real team effort.

Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) led the way in the singles competition. The sophomore recorded shutout sets at the No. 4 singles pairing. Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) followed not too far behind in the dominating performance column at No. 5 singles, she was just one point shy of shutout sets. Other notable performances came from Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs), who won her first set 6-0, however she had already had her moment to shine in the doubles competition. Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) and Charlotte Vick (Englewood, Fla./Evansville North (Ind.)) also took big wins in their individual matchups at No. 1 and No. 7 respectively.

Mika and graduate student Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) led the way in the doubles competition, sweeping their matchup at the No. 2 doubles pairing of the day. One point shy of a shutout, again, was Katz with teammate Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington). The two sophomores took the victory 6-1 in the No. 3 doubles competition. Still having dominant performances was the No. 1 doubles pairing of Carreras and Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista), who won their matchup 6-2.

The Blue and Gold have a few days to rest after such a big day at the West Haven Tennis Courts, after their match with USciences was canceled due to weather conditions.
