Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Joseph Klaus

Volleyball drops tough pair in New York

ROCKVILLE, N.Y. – Following an opening day sweep, the University of New Haven women's volleyball team returned to New York for their second day in a row of games with a doubleheader against the University of  Charleston followed by a matchup against Molloy College looking to improve upon their 2-0 start to the year.

Game 1

After a delayed start the Chargers took to the court to take on the Golden Eagles in the two programs first ever meeting. The Golden eagles entered the match a perfect 3-0 coming off beating Molloy in straight sets earlier in the day. New Haven, who entered having beaten Queens and Bridgeport the day before, looked to continue the success into the new day. The offense picked up right where they left off from Friday with Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) opening up with a kill to put the blue and gold up one. The streak would continue with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) both getting kills to put the Chargers up quickly 3-0. The Golden Eagles picked up two points cutting New Haven's lead to one before the blue and gold went out in front by three again. The remainder of the set would be back and forth between the two trading points, but a four point stretch by Charleston was the difference, taking the set 25-22. After another lead for the blue and gold to open up the second set it was New Haven working to catch up in the set after an early nine point streak for Charleston that would be the difference in the set taking it 25-16 and going up 2-0. In the crucial third set, New Haven had two early four point streaks with kills from Sydney Aber (Blaine, Minn./Blaine), Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) that put New Haven up 11-5 early. That lead would hold with Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) along with others picking up kills to win the set 25-23 and cut the lead to 2-1 in the match. Just as the previous three sets had been, the fourth was more of the same with both teams trading runs in the set and coming up with key kills when they needed them the most. Down the stretch the Chargers took the lead after kills from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty). However that would not be enough, as Charleston came back taking the set and the match 3-1 with a 25-22 fourth set win. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led the blue and gold with 17 kills followed by Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) with 15 as Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) notched 27 assists with Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) adding 25 and Carleigh Vedder (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) having 28 digs to lead New Haven.

Game 2

With their first loss the blue and gold looked to turn things around in their second match as they returned to the court taking on the hosts, Molloy College. Lifetime the Chargers were 17-1 against the Lions looking to extend their lifetime win streak and snap their losing streak. Molloy entered 1-3 after losing to Charleston earlier in the day. The Lions jumped out early on the Chargers scoring the first four points before New Haven jumped onto the board and Carleigh Vedder (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) landed a service ace to cut into the lead. The Chargers cut the lead to one with kills from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School), but the Lions kept the blue and gold at bay winning the opening set 25-14. Looking to bounce back New Haven jumped out to an early two nothing lead over the Lions before the two teams went back and forth staying close to each other before Molloy took the lead through the middle of the set. New Haven scored three points consecutively twice late with key kills from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who also added a service ace. That would unfortunately not be enough for the Chargers as the Lions would take the second set 25-20 and take the 2-0 lead in the match. The third set turned into a thrilling classic between the two trading points, taking leads and the other battling back to tie things up. Molloy got to set and match point before New Haven scored four straight with two kills from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) to get New Haven to set point. The Lions would then battle back and score three in a row to take the set 27-25 and the match 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led with 12 kills followed by Emma Lazerson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) who had 9 with Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) leading the way with assists with 10.
